You're at a casual work lunch with three coworkers — two you eat with regularly, and one, Ben, who recently transferred to the team and you're still getting to know. This morning you nearly overslept, rushed out the door in a panic, and ended up taking the highway exit in completely the wrong direction, driving 15 minutes before you realized and had to turn around.

Coworker AYou look wiped today, everything okay?
You (internally)Ben's at the table too, and you're still deciding how much to share with someone you don't know that well yet — but you decide to just go for it.
Coworker AWait, did you oversleep again? Didn't this happen like last month too?

Hint 1: Direction (US version)
Open by naming the setup briefly (nearly overslept, rushed out) and then plant the twist (took the wrong highway exit) as a separate beat rather than folding everything into one sentence — that pause is what invites someone to ask "wait, then what?" before you deliver the punchline (15 minutes the wrong way before noticing). When speaking to a small group that includes someone you don't know well yet, avoid directing the whole story at just one person — keep your delivery open to the table. After the punchline, don't linger on self-pity; convert it into something light and hand the conversational floor back, ideally toward the person you're less close to, as a small way of inviting them in.
Hint 2: Useful phrases (US version)
Turn 1 (setup + planting the twist): "Yeah, so... I almost overslept, flew out of the house in a panic, and somehow got on the highway going completely the wrong direction." — pause here. Turn 2 (the punchline + light self-aware tag): "...and I didn't notice for like fifteen minutes. I was just vaguely thinking 'huh, this doesn't look right' the whole time before it clicked." Turn 3 (closing lightly + passing the floor): "So I basically used up my whole day's worth of panic before 9am. Ben, please tell me you've got a better morning story than that."

YouYeah, so... I almost overslept, flew out of the house in a panic, and somehow got on the highway going completely the wrong direction.
Coworker AOh no. Please tell me you noticed before, like, the next state.
YouHonestly not far off — it took me a solid fifteen minutes. I just kept thinking "huh, this doesn't look right" the whole time before it actually clicked.
Ben(laughing) Okay that's kind of impressive in a bad way. I once missed my own exit going to a job interview, so — no judgment here.
YouSee, now I feel better. Honestly I used up a whole day's worth of panic before 9am. Ben, sounds like you've got a story too — how'd the interview go after that?
Explanation (US version)

Turn 1 plants the twist (wrong direction) without immediately resolving it, which is what gives coworker A room to ask a follow-up question instead of the story feeling fully told in one breath. Turn 2 is the hardest part: the punchline lands ("fifteen minutes"), but it's kept light with a small self-aware detail ("huh, this doesn't look right") rather than piling on more description of how stressed or embarrassed you were — that restraint is what keeps it funny instead of tipping into asking for sympathy. Turn 3 matters especially because Ben is someone you don't know well yet: instead of just wrapping up your own story, you immediately open the floor to his ("sounds like you've got a story too"), which turns a one-person anecdote into a shared moment and gives the newer relationship something small to build on.

I basically used up my whole day's worth of panic before 9am" のように一言でポジティブなオチに変換して締める傾向が強い。
