You're back in your hometown for the holidays and run into Alex, a high school friend you were close with back then but now only text once or twice a year. You end up sitting down together at a coffee shop near the old train station to catch up.

YouWait, Alex?! Oh my god, I didn't know you were back in town too.
AlexYeah, just for the holidays. Didn't expect to run into you here of all places.
YouSo how's everything going? Still as busy as ever?
AlexEh... it's been okay, I guess. Things have been a lot with my mom's health lately.
You (internally)Something in how Alex said that feels heavier than the tone suggests. You hesitate for a second on whether to press further.
AlexShe's been having some health issues, so I've been doing a lot of the doctor's appointments and stuff. It's not a big deal though, really.

Hint 1: Direction (US version)
Treat "it's not a big deal" as a soft signal that Alex might actually want to talk about it but is downplaying it out of habit or not wanting to burden you. Rather than jumping straight to asking about the mother's condition, start with an open question about the impact on Alex personally — that's an easier entry point. When Alex uses an emotional word (like "a lot" or "exhausting"), reflect it back and ask a follow-up that goes one layer deeper rather than moving on to a new topic. Close not with another question but with a short summary of what you heard plus a small offer of support, so it lands as care rather than prying.
Hint 2: Useful phrases (US version)
Turn 1 (open question focused on Alex's own load): "That sounds like it takes up a lot of time and energy. How are you holding up with all of that, honestly?" Turn 2 (catching the emotional word and going one layer deeper): if Alex says something like "it's been a lot," respond with "Yeah, that makes sense — what's been the hardest part for you specifically?" Turn 3 (summarize + light support, minimal self-disclosure): "It sounds like you've been carrying a lot of this on your own. I'm really glad you told me — seriously, text me anytime if you need to vent."

YouThat sounds like it takes up a lot of time and energy. How are you holding up with all of that, honestly?
Alex(a little surprised) Oh... honestly, it's been a lot. Between that and work, I don't really have much left over some days.
YouYeah, that makes sense. What's been the hardest part for you specifically?
AlexProbably when I get a call in the middle of the workday and have to just drop everything. I feel bad asking my team to cover for me so much. I don't think I've really told anyone that.
YouIt sounds like you've been carrying a lot of this on your own. I'm really glad you told me — seriously, text me anytime if you need to vent.
Explanation (US version)

Turn 1 avoids the generic "are you okay?" and instead asks specifically how Alex is holding up personally, which signals real interest in Alex's experience rather than just the facts of the situation. Turn 2 is the critical move: instead of changing the subject or offering generic sympathy, it picks up the exact phrase Alex used ("a lot") and turns it into a more specific question, which is what invites Alex to go further and eventually admit "I don't think I've really told anyone that." Turn 3 closes by summarizing what was heard rather than asking yet another question, which prevents the conversation from feeling like an interview, and adds a small concrete offer of support without pivoting to a long story of your own — keeping Alex as the focus of the conversation throughout.

How are you holding up?" What's been the hardest part for you specifically?"
