第1稿(候補テーマ A: Bridging Worlds)
[Hook]:
For three years, I held in my hand the marketing brochure for a
structured note. The cover showed a graceful upward curve—a
suggestion of safety and reward. The math behind that curve, which
I never read until I had to actually understand it, told a different
story: a tangle of probability distributions, hedging strategies,
and counter-party assumptions that the brochure had to pretend did
not exist.
[Body 1 - The Realization]:
What mattered to me changed in those years, in a slow, almost
invisible way. I had grown up in a Japan where the gap between
what is presented and what is real felt like the deepest unspoken
tension in our economy: between the elegant facade and the complex
machinery beneath. Selling structured products to retired engineers
and regional banks was, for me, an extended encounter with that
gap. By the time I left Tokai Tokyo Securities at 27, I had come
to believe that what matters most is being on the side that
narrows that gap rather than widens it.
[Body 2 - The Decision]:
I left without an offer in software engineering, without a contact
in the technology industry, and without a CS degree. I had a CMA
designation, a stable income, and a colleague's voice asking why
anyone with my training would walk away. None of that was an
answer to the question I had started asking myself: would I rather
explain a product, or build one? I spent the next four months
teaching myself Python in 14-hour days and accepted a position at
RAKUS Partners, who were willing to take an experiment on a
financially-trained 28-year-old.
[Body 3 - The Continuation]:
What I do at MonotaRO now is, in a different vocabulary, the same
work. Our Sales Promotion Orchestration System narrows the gap
between what marketing operators imagine they can do and what the
underlying systems actually permit. The data infrastructure I help
maintain narrows the gap between what executives believe is happening
in our industrial customer base and what is actually happening. Each
line of code I write is a small bet that translation can be made
honest.
[Body 4 - Why This Matters Now]:
This is why I think about Japan's industrial sector with a particular
urgency. The gap between the operational mastery we have built over
decades and the digital infrastructure we will need over the next
ten years is not, in my view, primarily a technical gap. It is a
translation gap—between operators and engineers, between executives
and code, between the past and the future. What matters most to me
is becoming the kind of leader who closes such gaps rather than
profits from them.
[Conclusion]:
Stanford GSB is the place where I want to take this commitment
further—because the kind of leadership that closes gaps cannot be
self-taught. It requires the encounter with people who think
fundamentally differently from me, and the discipline to interrogate
my own assumptions. That is the conversation I want to have for two
years.
