モデル解答(Band 7.5〜8.0相当)
The internet has fundamentally transformed how humans interact, sparking debate about whether this change has been beneficial or harmful to social bonds. While there are legitimate concerns about digital isolation, I believe that the internet has, on balance, enhanced our capacity for meaningful connection.
Those who argue that the internet isolates individuals point to the prevalence of shallow, screen-mediated interactions. When people scroll through social media feeds rather than engaging in face-to-face conversations, relationships may become more superficial. Research suggests that heavy social media use is associated with increased feelings of loneliness, particularly among young people who may substitute online validation for genuine emotional intimacy. In crowded restaurants, it is increasingly common to see families staring at their phones rather than speaking to each other, highlighting how digital devices can create physical presence with emotional absence.
On the other hand, the internet has enabled connections that would have been impossible in previous generations. Individuals living in rural areas or those with niche interests can now find communities of like-minded people worldwide. Moreover, the internet allows families separated by immigration or work to maintain daily contact through video calls, effectively bridging geographical distance. In this sense, technology has not replaced human connection but extended its reach far beyond what was previously achievable.
In conclusion, while the internet carries risks of social withdrawal when misused, its potential to facilitate genuine, far-reaching connections is far greater. The key lies not in the technology itself, but in how individuals choose to engage with it.
