モデル解答(Band 7.5〜8.0相当)
The proliferation of smartphones has transformed the way people communicate, leading many to argue that these devices have significantly harmed interpersonal relationships and social competence. I largely agree with this view, though I acknowledge that smartphones can also play a constructive role in maintaining certain types of relationships.
The most compelling argument in favour of this position is that constant smartphone use has eroded the quality of face-to-face interaction. Research by psychologist Sherry Turkle has shown that even the mere presence of a phone on a table reduces the depth of conversation between people. A common example is 'phubbing' — the act of snubbing someone in a social setting — which signals to others that virtual notifications are more important than their presence. Over time, this habitual behaviour diminishes people's capacity for empathy and active listening.
Nevertheless, it would be an oversimplification to dismiss smartphones as entirely detrimental. For individuals who live far from their families or friends, video calling applications such as FaceTime or WhatsApp have made it possible to sustain intimate connections that would otherwise weaken with distance. Similarly, for introverted individuals or those with social anxiety, digital communication offers a less intimidating platform.
On balance, while smartphones undeniably serve as valuable tools for long-distance communication, their overall effect on everyday social skills and interpersonal depth is predominantly negative. Society would benefit from developing greater awareness of mindful smartphone use.
