This cycle begins when an individual encounters a task that triggers negative emotions such as anxiety, boredom, self-doubt, or resentment. Rather than tolerating these uncomfortable feelings, the person engages in mood repair through distraction, which provides immediate emotional relief but ultimately exacerbates the problem.
Neurological research has shed further light on why some people are more susceptible to procrastination than others. The human brain therefore evolved to prioritise near-term concerns over distant ones.
Interventions targeting procrastination have met with varying degrees of success. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) has proven effective for some individuals by helping them identify and challenge the distorted beliefs that underlie avoidance behaviour, such as perfectionism or catastrophising. Implementation intentions — specific plans that detail when, where, and how a task will be completed — have also demonstrated efficacy in controlled trials.
Perhaps the most counterintuitive finding in procrastination research is that self-compassion, rather than self-criticism, appears to be a more effective remedy. Studies by Dr. Kristin Neff and colleagues have found that individuals who treat themselves with kindness following a procrastination episode are less likely to procrastinate on subsequent tasks.
