Part 1 — Q&A
Yes, I'd say I use it almost constantly throughout the day. I work as a software engineer, so I spend a lot of my working hours browsing documentation, reading technical articles, and communicating with colleagues online. Even outside of work, I tend to stream videos or check the news in the evenings.
In my free time, I'm quite into watching tech-related videos online and occasionally playing video games. I also enjoy taking walks around the neighbourhood when the weather is nice — it gives me a chance to switch off from screens and clear my head a bit.
Actually, yes — I've recently been learning about machine learning as part of my job. It's a fascinating field, and I've been going through some online courses in my spare time. I find it challenging but rewarding.
Absolutely — it's central to everything I do at work. As a software engineer, technology isn't just a tool; it's the very foundation of my job. I use various programming languages, cloud services, and collaboration platforms on a daily basis.
Part 2 — Cue Card
Describe a piece of technology that you use every day.
- what it is
- how long you have been using it
- what you use it for
- and explain why you think it is useful or important to you.
The piece of technology I'd like to describe is my smartphone. It's without a doubt the device I rely on most heavily in my day-to-day life. I've been using a smartphone for well over ten years now. In terms of what I use it for, the list is quite long. At work, I use it to check emails and communicate with my team through messaging apps. Outside of work, I use it for navigation, watching short videos, and managing my schedule. What I find particularly useful about my smartphone is how it consolidates so many functions into a single device. Before smartphones, you'd need a separate camera, a map, a music player, and a phone. Now all of that fits in your pocket. The main reason it's so important to me personally is the connectivity it provides. Whether I need to reach a friend, look something up, or get work done remotely, my smartphone makes all of that possible. Without it, I think I'd genuinely struggle to keep up with both my professional and personal life.
Part 3 — 抽象的な議論
Technology has fundamentally transformed communication. The most obvious change is speed — we can now send a message to someone on the other side of the world instantly. Additionally, the range of communication channels has expanded enormously. People now choose between texting, voice calls, video calls, and social media. However, some people argue that face-to-face communication has suffered as a result, and that relationships have become more superficial.
To a certain extent, I think that's a fair observation. Young people today have grown up with smartphones, so it's natural that they rely on them heavily. Many struggle to navigate without GPS, or to look up information without a search engine. That said, I don't think dependence is entirely negative — it's a sign that technology is genuinely useful. The concern is when it starts to replace basic skills.
The biggest advantage is flexibility — you can often choose when and where to work, which improves work-life balance for many people. For me personally, not having to commute saves about two hours a day. However, the main disadvantage is that it can be harder to separate work from personal time. When your office is also your home, it can be difficult to truly switch off.
