Some people believe that social media platforms have a negative impact on mental health, particularly among young people. Others, however, argue that social media can have positive effects by fostering connection and support.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Write at least 250 words. You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Introduction: "Social media has become deeply embedded in contemporary life, particularly among younger generations. While many argue that these platforms have a damaging effect on psychological wellbeing, others contend that they offer a sense of belonging and emotional support. I believe that social media has the potential for both harm and benefit, and its impact is largely determined by patterns of use."

Body 1(負の影響): "Those who view social media negatively point to the phenomenon of social comparison, whereby users constantly measure themselves against the curated, idealised versions of others' lives. This process has been linked to lower self-esteem, increased anxiety, and even depression, especially in adolescents. Furthermore, the addictive nature of platforms designed to maximise engagement means that excessive use can disrupt sleep patterns and reduce time spent on more fulfilling offline activities."

Body 2(正の影響): "However, it would be an oversimplification to dismiss social media as entirely harmful. For individuals who feel isolated — whether due to geographical distance, illness, or belonging to a minority group — online communities can provide a crucial source of peer support and validation. [具体例: Reddit / Instagram communities]"

Conclusion: "On balance, I believe that the effects of social media on mental health are not inherently positive or negative but are shaped by the individual's habits and intentions. Encouraging digital literacy and mindful usage, particularly among young people, is likely to be more effective than blanket restrictions."

Introduction
Social media has become deeply embedded in contemporary life, particularly among younger generations. While many argue that these platforms have a damaging effect on psychological wellbeing, others contend that they offer a sense of belonging and emotional support. I believe that social media has the potential for both harm and benefit, and its impact is largely determined by patterns of use.
Those who view social media negatively point to the phenomenon of social comparison, whereby users constantly measure themselves against the curated, idealised versions of others' lives. This process has been linked to lower self-esteem, increased anxiety, and even depression, especially in adolescents. Furthermore, the addictive nature of platforms designed to maximise engagement means that excessive use can disrupt sleep patterns and reduce time spent on more fulfilling offline activities.
However, it would be an oversimplification to dismiss social media as entirely harmful. For individuals who feel isolated — whether due to geographical distance, illness, or belonging to a minority group — online communities can provide a crucial source of peer support and validation. Platforms such as Instagram and Reddit host mental health communities where people share coping strategies, reducing the stigma surrounding psychological difficulties and offering genuine human connection.
Conclusion
On balance, I believe that the effects of social media on mental health are not inherently positive or negative but are shaped by the individual's habits and intentions. Encouraging digital literacy and mindful usage, particularly among young people, is likely to be more effective than blanket restrictions.
