IELTS Speaking

IELTS Speaking

Part 2 Cue Card(1
今日のトピック: Environment and Sustainability(環境と持続可能性)

Opening: "I'd like to talk about my habit of carefully sorting and recycling my household waste."

What + How long: "I separate rubbish into [X] categories... I've been doing this for about [Y] years, since I [started working / moved to this area / watched a documentary]."

How difficult: "At first it took [effort / planning / habit-building]... but now it's second nature and I barely think about it."

Why important: "Landfills are rapidly running out of space / recycling reduces the need to extract raw materials / lowers carbon emissions from waste processing."

Conclusion: "Even if it's a small step, every little bit helps, and if everyone did the same, the cumulative impact would be significant."

Part 1

PART 1 — Q1
Q1: Do you try to protect the environment?
Yes, I do make a conscious effort, though I'm aware I could do more. For instance, I always separate my household waste for recycling and I've switched to reusable bags for grocery shopping. I also try to cycle to work when the weather allows, which reduces my carbon footprint a little.
PART 1 — Q2
Q2: Environmental events?
Actually, yes. I participated in a local clean-up event at a nearby river bank last spring. It was organised by a community group, and we collected quite a surprising amount of rubbish. It was a bit eye-opening, to be honest, and it made me more aware of how much litter ends up in waterways.
PART 1 — Q4
Q4: Types of transport?
I mainly use public transport — the train and bus — for my daily commute, which I think is already a relatively eco-friendly choice. On weekends, I often cycle for shorter journeys. I do own a car, but I try to use it only when public transport isn't practical, such as for long trips with heavy luggage.

(Cue Card)

PART 2 — Band 7.5〜8.0
Opening
I'd like to talk about my habit of reducing single-use plastics — something I've been committed to for about two and a half years.
What it is + How long
Essentially, I've made a deliberate effort to eliminate as many single-use plastics from my daily life as possible. This includes always carrying a reusable bag, using a stainless steel water bottle, and choosing products with minimal or recyclable packaging. I started after watching a documentary on ocean pollution that was genuinely disturbing — images of marine animals entangled in plastic waste really motivated me to change my habits.
How difficult
At first, it required a real shift in mindset. I had to plan ahead more — remembering to pack my water bottle, for instance — and sometimes I had to actively seek out shops that offer eco-friendly alternatives. There were moments of frustration when convenience won out. But over time, it became second nature, and I rarely even think about it now.
Why important
I believe this matters enormously. Single-use plastics often end up in landfills or the ocean, where they take hundreds of years to decompose. By cutting my personal plastic consumption, I feel I'm at least not contributing to the problem — and if millions of people made similar choices, the cumulative impact would be substantial.
Conclusion
I'd encourage anyone to start small, because even replacing one plastic item a week with a sustainable alternative adds up over time.

Part 3

Personally, I think it's a shared responsibility, though I'd argue governments bear greater accountability. Governments have the power to legislate, regulate industries, and fund green infrastructure on a scale that individuals simply cannot. Without strong policies — things like carbon taxes, renewable energy subsidies, or bans on harmful substances — individual efforts remain fragmented and insufficient.
That said, individuals aren't off the hook. Consumer choices drive market demand, so if people consistently opt for sustainable products, companies are incentivised to change their practices. I think the most effective approach is a combination: governments setting the framework and individuals acting within it responsibly.
Companies can take action on several fronts. First and most importantly, they can transition to renewable energy sources for their operations. Second, they can redesign their supply chains to minimise waste and carbon emissions. Third, they can adopt circular economy principles, meaning products are designed to be repaired, reused, or recycled rather than discarded.
Some forward-thinking companies are already doing this — not only because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes business sense: reduced waste means lower costs, and sustainability increasingly attracts both talent and customers.
