ACADEMIC READING PASSAGE
A
Procrastination — the act of delaying or postponing tasks — is far more than a simple time-management problem. Researchers have increasingly come to view it as a complex psychological phenomenon rooted in emotional regulation rather than poor planning or laziness. According to Dr Fuschia Sirois of the University of Sheffield, "Procrastination is essentially the prioritisation of short-term mood repair over long-term goals." In other words, people avoid tasks not because they are unaware of deadlines, but because those tasks provoke feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, or boredom that the individual is unwilling to experience.
B
Studies suggest that procrastination is strongly associated with low self-efficacy — an individual's belief in their own capacity to complete a given task. When people doubt their ability to succeed, they are more likely to delay beginning in order to protect themselves from the possibility of failure. This avoidance behaviour may provide temporary relief, but it typically amplifies the original anxiety over time, creating a self-reinforcing cycle that becomes increasingly difficult to break. A 2013 meta-analysis published in the journal Psychological Bulletin examined over 80 studies and found a consistent negative correlation between procrastination and academic performance.
C
Not all delay is created equal, however. Psychologist Timothy Pychyl draws a sharp distinction between "passive procrastination," in which individuals fail to act despite intending to, and "active delay," a deliberate strategic choice to defer a task in order to work more effectively under pressure. Active delay, Pychyl argues, can in fact be adaptive: professionals such as lawyers and editors often perform their best work closest to a deadline, where the urgency itself enhances focus and efficiency. Passive procrastination, by contrast, is almost universally associated with poorer outcomes and higher levels of psychological distress.
D
The relationship between procrastination and technology merits particular attention. Digital devices offer an inexhaustible supply of easily accessible, instantly gratifying alternatives to effortful cognitive work. Social media platforms, in particular, are engineered to exploit the brain's reward circuitry through variable reinforcement schedules — the same mechanism responsible for gambling addiction. A 2021 survey conducted by researchers at the University of Gothenburg found that university students who reported heavy smartphone use were 2.4 times more likely to identify themselves as chronic procrastinators than their peers who used phones moderately.
E
Interventions to reduce procrastination have yielded mixed but generally encouraging results. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques, which target the negative self-beliefs and catastrophic thinking patterns that underlie avoidance behaviour, have shown particular promise. A randomised controlled trial conducted in Canada found that students who received six sessions of group CBT reported significantly lower procrastination scores and improved academic outcomes compared with a control group. Implementation intentions — specific "if-then" plans such as "If it is 9am on Monday, I will work on my thesis for 30 minutes" — have also demonstrated effectiveness in reducing the gap between intention and action.
F
Despite growing awareness of procrastination as a mental health concern, significant stigma persists. Many individuals interpret their own procrastination through a moral lens, viewing it as evidence of weakness or lack of discipline, rather than as a learnable behaviour pattern amenable to change. This self-blame has been shown to exacerbate the problem: people who judge themselves harshly after an episode of procrastination are more likely to procrastinate again, as guilt and shame further impair their capacity for self-regulation. Researchers therefore advocate for self-compassion — treating oneself with the same understanding one would extend to a friend — as an essential component of effective behaviour change.

→ 一致 = TRUE / 矛盾 = FALSE / 記述なし = NOT GIVEN
Step 2: パッセージ内でそのキーワードを含む文をスキャニングで探す
Step 3: 設問の主張と本文の主張を比較する

Multiple Choice の罠回避
| 罠のタイプ | 説明 | 対策 |
|---|---|---|
| 本文に「ありそうな」情報 | 常識的に正しそうだが本文に書かれていない | 必ず本文の根拠文を特定してから選ぶ |
