Day 127 — Vocabulary & Grammar: 倒置構文(Inversion)— Environmental Policy & Economic Development

2026-08-19 Phase 3 — Band 6.5 目標 Vocabulary(水曜) 文変形 + エラー訂正 + 空所補充 | 15問 | 20分

背景知識

Vocabulary Day — 水曜

今日から Phase 3 Vocabulary テーマの3番目、倒置構文(Inversion)に入ります。

倒置とは、通常「主語 + 動詞」の語順を「(助)動詞 + 主語」に入れ替える構文です。IELTS Writing Task 2 のBody paragraphやConclusionでこれを1〜2箇所自然に使えると、Grammatical Range and Accuracy(GRA)の "a wide range of structures" という採点基準に直結し、Band 7以上を狙う際の明確な差別化要素になります。Speaking Part 3の高度な意見表明でも、"Never have I seen..." のような表現は説得力を強めます。

倒置には大きく3つのパターンがあります。

パターントリガー語語順
① 否定・限定の副詞(句)Never / Rarely / Seldom / Little / Not only / No sooner ... than / Only after / Under no circumstances / Not until副詞句 + 助動詞 + 主語 + 動詞(原形)
② 条件節(If の省略)Had(If had→過去完了) / Were(If were→仮定法過去) / Should(If should→未来の可能性)助動詞 + 主語 + 動詞...
③ so / such 構文So + 形容詞 + be動詞 + 主語 + that節 / Such + be動詞 + 主語 + that節so/such主導の倒置 + that節

Q1のNever・Q2のRarelyは一般動詞の文なので助動詞(do/does/did/have/has)を補って主語の前に出す。Q3のNot onlyは「not only+倒置, but also+平叙文」という非対称な構造に注意。Q4のNo sooner...thanは「had+主語+過去分詞」という過去完了形との組み合わせが必須。Q5のOnly afterは「afterの後ろに続く句・節」自体は倒置せず、メインの節(researchers discovered...)だけを倒置する点に注意。

すべての文でトリガー語の直後を確認する。「トリガー語 + 主語 + 動詞」とそのまま平叙文の語順になっていれば誤り。正しくは「トリガー語 + 助動詞 + 主語 + 動詞(原形)」のはず。Q9は So + 形容詞の倒置なのに be動詞が主語の後ろに残っている("the drought was" のまま)。Q6・Q10も同様に助動詞が主語の前に出ていない。Q7は Not only の後が平叙文のまま、Q8は Under no circumstances の後が平叙文のまま。

Q11は「If it had not been for」の倒置なので過去完了の Had。Q12は「If the results should prove」の倒置なので未来の可能性を表す Should。Q13は形容詞(compelling)の直前に置く強調語なので So。Q14は「If a solution had been found」の倒置なので Had。Q15は「Such + be動詞 + 主語」の型で、後ろに具体的な形容詞がなく名詞(pressure)そのものを強調しているので Such。So は形容詞・副詞を直接修飾する場合、Such は名詞句全体を修飾する場合に使う、という区別がポイント。

解答分析

Part Aで扱った5パターン(Never / Rarely / Not only...but also / No sooner...than / Only after)はすべて「文頭の副詞(句)+助動詞+主語+動詞(原形)」という共通の骨格を持つ。この骨格を一度体に染み込ませれば、Writing Task 2のConclusion("Only by addressing both economic and environmental concerns can governments achieve sustainable growth."
