背景知識

Vocabulary Day — 水曜

今日から Phase 3 Vocabulary テーマの4番目、強調構文(Cleft Sentences)に入ります。

強調構文とは、1つの平叙文を「It is/was ... that ...」や「What ... is ...」

① It-cleft(基本)It is/was + 強調要素 + that/who + 残りの節主語・目的語・副詞句などを強調
② It-cleft(否定対比)It is/was not + A + but + B + that ...「AではなくBが〜」という対比を強調
③ Wh-cleft(pseudo-cleft)What + 主語 + 動詞 + is/was + 強調要素「〜が必要とするものは…だ」という形で強調
④ Reverse Wh-cleft強調要素 + is/was + what + 主語 + 動詞Wh-cleftの語順を逆にした形
⑤ All-cleftAll + (that) + 主語 + 動詞 + is/was + 強調要素「〜だけが…だ」という排他的な強調

日本人学習者が最も間違えやすいのは、It-cleftのIt is/wasを強調要素の数に一致させてしまうこと(例: ×"It are the platforms that...")と、Wh-cleft内のwhat節の動詞を主語に一致させ忘れること、All-cleftでwhatを使ってしまうこと(All that... が正しく、All what...

It is not A but B that の型にそのまま流し込む。Q4は「Declining trust...を主語のまま保ちつつ、それが本当の説明要因である」ことを示すReverse Wh-cleftで、Wh-cleftを逆順にした形(強調要素が先、what節が後)になる点に注意。Q5は"only"が持つ「それだけ」というニュアンスをAll that ... is ...で表現する。

It-cleftとWh-cleftでは、動詞の一致対象が異なることを意識する。Q6は "It are" となっているが、Itは常に三人称単数扱いなので "It is" が正しい(後ろのthat節の主語がplatforms=複数でも、It自体の動詞は変わらない)。Q7は "What most readers wants" のwhat節内部の動詞が、その節の主語(readers=複数)と一致していない誤り。Q8は時を強調するIt-cleftで関係詞に "which" を使っているが、時を表す場合は "that" か "when" を使うのが正しい。Q9は無生物(the platform)を受ける関係詞に "who" を使っている誤り(無生物には that/which)。Q10は All-cleftで "what" を使っているが、All-cleftは "All that ..." が正しい形(All whatは非文法的)。

Q11は「新聞の調査報道こそが辞任を引き起こした」という基本のIt-cleftなので It。Q12は「ジャーナリストが最も重視するもの」という抽象的な内容を導くWh-cleftなので What。Q13は「All that ... is ...」の骨格の中に否定対比(not A but B)が入れ子になっている形で、"is" の直後に続くのは not。Q14は「ソーシャルメディアだけではなく複合要因が」という否定対比のIt-cleftなので not("It was not X but Y that..."の型)。Q15は「アルゴリズムの設計選択こそが行動を形作るものだ」というReverse Wh-cleft(強調要素 + are + what + S + V)なので what。

解答分析

Part Aで扱った5パターン(It-cleft基本 / Wh-cleft / It-cleft否定対比 / Reverse Wh-cleft / All-cleft)はいずれも、強調したい要素を文頭または"is/was"の直後に置き、残りの内容をthat節・what節に押し込むという共通の操作を持つ。この操作を意識できると、Writing Task 2のBody paragraphで「本当の原因は〜だ」「必要なのは〜だけだ」という主張を際立たせる際に自然に応用できる(例: "What governments need to prioritise is not economic growth alone but environmental sustainability.")。
