背景知識

Vocabulary Day — 水曜

今日から Phase 3 Vocabulary テーマの5番目、分詞構文(Participial Phrases)に入ります。

分詞構文とは、2つの文(または従属節と主節)を1つにまとめる際に、接続詞と主語を省略し、動詞を分詞(-ing形または-ed/p.p.形)に変えて文をコンパクトにする構文です。IELTS Writing Task 2・Task 1では、単文を接続詞(because, when, after, and, so)でつなぐだけの文章は稚拙に見えるため、分詞構文を使って情報を凝縮できるとGrammatical Range and Accuracy(GRA)の構造の幅に直結して評価されます。また冗長な繰り返し(同じ主語の再登場)を避けられるため、Coherence and Cohesion(CC)の観点でも文章が引き締まります。

分詞構文には主に3つの形があります。

パターン形用途
① 現在分詞構文(能動)V-ing + ..., 主節主語が「〜する」側(能動的な動作・同時進行・理由)
② 過去分詞構文(受動)V-ed/p.p. + ..., 主節主語が「〜される」側(受動的な状態・理由)
③ 完了分詞構文Having + p.p.(+ been + p.p.)

例えば "Analysing the survey results, several inconsistencies were found by the team."

やHaving been + p.p.のような完了分詞構文は、IELTS Writing Task 2のBody paragraphで「先行研究や既存の取り組みを踏まえた上で、次の主張を展開する」という論証パターン(例: "Having considered both perspectives, it becomes clear that...")に直結する。今回の健康・医学研究という文脈では、"systematic review"(系統的レビュー)や"generalisability"(一般化可能性)、"correlation vs. causation"(相関と因果の区別)といった学術語彙も同時に定着させておくと、Reading PassageやTask 2の医療・科学トピックでそのまま応用できる。
