背景知識

Vocabulary Day — 水曜

① 名詞節(Noun Clause)名詞と同じ働き(主語・目的語・補語・同格)that, whether, if, what, how, why, who, when(疑問詞)That the budget was cut surprised no one.(主語)
② 副詞節(Adverb Clause)動詞・文全体を修飾(理由・時・条件・譲歩・目的)because, although, when, if, so that, whereas, whileAlthough the mission faced delays, it succeeded.
③ 形容詞節(関係詞節)直前の名詞(先行詞)を修飾who, which, that, whose, where, when(関係詞)Scientists who study exoplanets rely on telescopes.

日本人学習者が最も混乱するのは、同じ "that" や "which" が、文脈によって名詞節にも形容詞節にもなるという点です。見分け方は明快で、"that/which" の前に先行詞(修飾される名詞)があるかどうかで判断します。

  • The fact that private companies now outspend agencies has changed everything. → "the fact" という名詞に対して "that" 以下が内容を説明している(同格の名詞節)。"that" の後ろは完全な文(欠けている要素がない)。
  • The rocket that exploded during testing was a prototype. → "the rocket" という名詞を "that 以下" が限定・修飾している(形容詞節=関係代名詞節)。"that" の後ろは主語が欠けた不完全な文("that" 自体が主語の役割を兼ねる)。

この違いは、"that" の後ろの文が完全文か不完全文かでほぼ判別できます。同格のthat節を取れる名詞は限られており、"the fact that / the belief that / the possibility that / evidence that / the news that" などの抽象名詞に多く見られます。

the laboratory which the astronauts trained" のように、関係詞節の中に前置詞(trained in the laboratory)が本来必要な場合、関係代名詞の "which" だけでは前置詞の情報が欠落するため、"where"(またはin which)を使う必要があります。

Q6は "because of" の後ろに節(the budget was cut)が来てしまっている誤り。Q7は "The reason ... was because ..."

特にQ3の同格節(the fact that...)は、IELTS Writing Task 2で「主張を抽象名詞で受けてから具体的内容を説明する」という高度な論証パターン(例: "There is growing concern that...")

また "the fact that public funding could be reallocated to more pressing needs" のような同格の名詞節を使った主張の立て方は、Discussion EssayやAdvantage-Disadvantage Essayの説得力を大きく高める。

よくある日本人のミス

ミス原因正しい書き方
Because of the budget was cut, the mission was cancelled. because(接続詞)とbecause of(前置詞句)を混同し、後ろに節を続けてしまう Because the budget was cut, the mission was cancelled.
The reason the mission failed was because the software had a bug. 「理由は〜だから」を直訳しようとしてreasonとbecauseを重複させる The reason the mission failed was that the software had a bug.
Scientists don't know that the mission will succeed or not. 「〜かどうか」を表す名詞節にthatを使ってしまう(whetherと混同) Scientists don't know whether the mission will succeed or not.
This is the laboratory which the astronauts trained for six months. 関係詞節内に前置詞が必要な構造(trained in the laboratory)を意識せず、whichだけで済ませる This is the laboratory where the astronauts trained for six months.
What the agency announced surprised no one, that was already leaked. 名詞節(What...)の後にさらにthatを重ね、非制限用法の関係代名詞whichを使うべき箇所を誤る What the agency announced surprised no one, which had already been leaked.
