Day 166 — Vocabulary & Grammar: Mixed conditionals を書き言葉で — 倒置(Had / Were / Should)と But for

Mixed conditionals は Day150(話し言葉)、Day157(Subjunctive)、Day162(都市の緑化を題材にした5問)で触れてきました。

If the reform had been introduced earlier, ...Had the reform been introduced earlier, ...Had the reform not been introduced, ...
If the city were not so reliant on one employer, ...Were the city not so reliant on one employer, ...(not は主語の後)
If the city were to lose its main employer, ...Were the city to lose its main employer, ...
If anything should go wrong, ...Should anything go wrong, ...Should anything not go as planned, ...

Were the current trend continue" のように一般動詞をそのまま続けることはできません。否定の not は主語の後ろに置きます("Had not the government ..."

(Grammatical Range and Accuracy)

Some people think university education should be free for all students. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Mixed conditional を1つ/倒置(Had・Were・Should)を1つ/過去の因果は might・could・arguably で弱める

now / today / in 2015 / last year。
Were it not for + would は定型。
  4. 倒置は3つだけ(Had / Were / Should)。Were の後は be 動詞か to + 原形。

Had + S + 過去分詞, S would (have) ... Had funding been secured, the programme would still be running.(資金が確保されていたら、計画は今も続いていただろう)
Were fees to be abolished, universities would need new income.(仮に学費が廃止されるなら、大学は新しい収入源が要るだろう)
Were the system less centralised, schools could respond faster.(制度がもっと中央集権的でなければ、学校はより速く対応できるだろう)
Should the pilot fail, the scheme will be reviewed.(試行が失敗した場合は、計画は見直される)
But for the grant, the study would not have begun.(助成金がなければ、研究は始まらなかっただろう)
Were it not for + 名詞現在の事実の反転〜がなければ(今)Were it not for public funding, many museums would close.(公的資金がなければ、多くの博物館は閉まるだろう)
Had it not been for + 名詞過去の事実の反転〜がなかったら(あのとき)Had it not been for the grant, ...(助成金がなかったら…)
The grant was approved; otherwise the study would have been cancelled.(助成金は承認された。
provided (that) / as long as接続詞(第1条件文の言い換え)〜という条件でFees may rise provided that support for low-income students is protected.(低所得の学生への支援が守られるなら、学費は上がってもよい)
arguably / might now / could well弱める表現おそらく〜だろうThe country might now have more nurses.(国には今ごろもっと看護師がいたかもしれない)

  • Q1: 「2000年代に(一回きりの過去)資金を出さなかった」→ had funded。「今も深刻」→ would not be
  • Q2: 「今も依存している」→ were not。「過去に打撃」→ would not have hit
  • Part B は4つの型の誤り: ① if 節に would have、② if 節の時制(過去の事実に過去形)、③ 主節の時制、④ 第2条件文に will
  • Q11: Had the library not ___ a donation in 2019, it ___
  • Q12: Were the city not so ___, a factory closure ___
  • Q13: But for ___, the research ___
  • Q14: Should anything ___, the scheme ___(主節は will のまま)
  • Q15: If ___ had invested more in rail in the 1980s, its freight network ___ now.

Part A 解答

1(a) had funded / would not beif 節: 一回きりの過去 → had funded。主節: now → would not be
2(a) were not / would not have hitif 節: 今も続く状態 → were not。主節: 過去の打撃 → would not have hit。
3(a) had not run / would not have been abandoned主節に in 2015 があるので過去。 (b) は would not be で時点が合わない。
Had the reform been introduced earlier, class sizes would now be smaller."(過去→現在の Mixed)
5(a) Were"Were + S + to + 原形"。(c) Should は "Should the current trend continue" の形で、"to continue" とは続かない

Part B

6If the university would have offeredIf the university had offered more scholarships, ...(if 節に would を入れない)
Were it not for + 現在の仮定 + would
8If the government did not cut the subsidy in 2012If the government had not cut the subsidy in 2012, ...(過去の事実の反転は過去完了)
9... would not improve so quickly last year... would not have improved so quickly last year(last year は過去なので would have + 過去分詞)
10... universities will need... universities would need ...(第2条件文は would。

Part C

11Had the library not received a donation in 2019, it would not be open today.not は主語の後ろ。"Had not the library ..."
12Were the city not so reliant on one employer, a factory closure would not be such a threat.be 動詞の文なので Were + S + 補語
13But for the grant, the research would not have started. But for の後ろは名詞。"But for it had not been" とは書かない
14Should anything go wrong with the pilot, the scheme will be suspended.Should の後ろは原形(goes → go)。
15If the country had invested more in rail in the 1980s, its freight network would not be outdated now.(または Had the country invested more in rail in the 1980s, its freight network would not be outdated now.)

Part D

(b) は "Research suggests" で根拠の存在を示し、"might now be better" で結果を弱めている
17(b)(a) は短縮形(hadn't, we'd)と "we" が口語的。

Part E

Free tuition would also widen participation. Were university education free at the point of use, students from low-income households would be less likely to rule out degrees that carry large debts, and the pool of applicants would broaden accordingly. This matters because the cost of study has arguably already deterred talented people: had fees been lower a generation ago, the country might now have more qualified nurses and engineers than it does. Critics fear that the Treasury could not sustain such a policy, but this objection is predicated on the assumption that funding must come from general taxation alone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Mixed

Mixed のはずの文を第3条件文にしてしまう(Q1 で "would not have been")誤りと、第3条件文のはずの文を Mixed にしてしまう(Q3 で "would not be abandoned")誤りです。

If the reform had been introduced earlier" と "Had the reform been introduced earlier" は、意味も文法的な正しさも同じです。

Part D:

倒置の範囲Had / Were / Should の3種のみNot only ... did / Only when ...

8問以上なら、次の水曜は仮定法の隣接領域(wish / as if / It is time ...)

(If you heat ice, it melts 型)・If only / wish / as if: wish / as if は次の水曜の候補
  • Unless / provided that / otherwise
倒置形の読み方は Speaking(金曜)の範囲外

If I would have known, ...主節の would have をそのまま if 節にも入れるIf I had known, ...
If the plan did not work out in 2015, ...過去の事実を反転するのに単純過去を使う(日本語は「〜なかったら」で時制を区別しない)If the plan had not worked out in 2015, ...
If tuition were abolished, universities will need ...「もし〜なら〜だろう」の「だろう」を will と訳す..., universities would need ...
Had not the government cut ...not を助動詞の前に置くHad the government not cut ...
Were the trend continue ...Were Were the trend to continue, ... / Should the trend continue, ...
But for the grant had not been, ...But for を接続詞のように使うBut for the grant, ...(後ろは名詞)

時点の判定に絞った3周目(Part B・C の結果が6問以下の場合)、または wish / as if / It is time ...
