時点と期間"only in 1918, thirty-five years later" → How long に 1918 と書く疑問詞(When / How long)に下線

Part A — Reading(10

(Day171): Matching Headings + Short Answer

When Clocks Disagreed

AUntil the middle of the nineteenth century, every town in Britain kept its own time. Noon was the moment the sun stood highest over the town, so clocks in Bristol ran about ten minutes behind those in London, and clocks in Exeter about fourteen. For a traveller on horseback the difference hardly mattered: a journey of several days absorbed a few minutes without anyone noticing, and no one could compare two clocks a hundred miles apart at the same instant.

BThe railways changed that. A train that covered in a few hours what a coach had covered in a day or more made ten minutes visible, and a timetable that had to state when a train left one town and reached another could not use two kinds of time without confusing passengers and staff alike. In November 1840 the Great Western Railway became the first company to run its timetable on London time. Others followed, and in 1847 the Railway Clearing House, the body that settled accounts between the companies, recommended that every station adopt Greenwich Mean Time.

CTowns accepted the change more slowly than the railway companies did, and some public clocks were fitted with two minute hands, one for local time and one for railway time. Yet the convenience of a single standard proved hard to resist, and by 1855 an estimated 98 per cent of towns and cities had switched. What had not changed was the law. In principle, an agreement made "at ten o'clock" could still refer to two different moments, and it was only in August 1880 that Parliament gave a single standard time for Great Britain legal force.

DNorth America faced the same problem on a much larger scale. The sun takes nearly four hours to cross the United States, and by the early 1880s the railroads were working to about fifty different times. At noon on 18 November 1883, remembered as "the day of two noons" because clocks in many towns struck twelve twice, the companies replaced them with a handful of standard zones, each one hour apart. As in Britain, the law followed the railways rather than leading them: Congress gave the zones legal force only in 1918, thirty-five years later.

Situation: A lecture in a course on the history of publishing.

you might expect / You'll often read / Admittedly

Today I want to look at a small object that changed who reads: the paperback. Now, you might expect me to say that the paperback was invented by Penguin. It wasn't. Cheap books with paper covers had been around for a century, and only a few years earlier a firm called Albatross had sold English reprints in a very similar format. What Allen Lane did in 1935 was different. He sold good books — serious novels, not just thrillers — for sixpence, which was the price of a packet of cigarettes.

You'll often read that bookshops welcomed the idea. Personally, I think the opposite is closer to the truth. Many booksellers feared that cheap books would cheapen the whole trade, and the order that saved the project came from outside it — from Woolworths, a chain store, which bought sixty-three thousand copies.

Admittedly, the covers were very plain. There were no pictures at all, just bands of colour and the title. But that plainness was the point. Orange meant general fiction, and green meant crime, so a reader could spot the kind of book they wanted from the other side of the shop.

The results came quickly. Within about ten months, a million Penguins had been printed. So when we talk about the paperback revolution, remember that it wasn't the paper that was new. It was that price, that colour code and that kind of shop.

Part D — Writing Task 2:

Essay question(参考): Top athletes are paid far more than people in essential jobs such as nursing. Is this justified?

Nowadays, top football players earn a plethora of money, which is a very significant problem. In a sense, their salaries are paid by broadcasting deals, so fans fund them through subscriptions. Some people argue that this phenomenon is unfair, because nurses earn much less. However, wage caps, which are used in some American leagues, could limit the gap and make the situation better for everyone.

Belmor's visitor numbers fell by 0.7 million each year.

Part F — Speaking(任意・5分)

FConnected speech(Day173)
Describe a time when you had to wait for something.
You should say: what you waited for / how long you waited / what you did while waiting / and explain how you felt about it.

Part
Q6 は How long=期間
Byou might expect … You'll often read … Personally, I think=他人の説→話者、Admittedly …
Cwish・It is (high) time・would rather の後ろは時制を1つ過去へ。 as if + were は正しい。had taxed → would be today の Mixed も正しい

Top footballers' salaries are funded largely by broadcasting deals, which means that fans who pay for television subscriptions are, indirectly, their employers. This is why critics compare those salaries with the pay of nurses, whose wages are set by public budgets rather than by ticket and television revenue. A salary cap of the kind used in American leagues such as the NFL would narrow the gap without banning high pay altogether.

青=話題の語(T)5種類、緑=固有名詞。plethora・very significant・in a sense・this phenomenon・make the situation better for everyone(すべて D か V)を消した。選手と看護師の年収比は今日照合していないので入れていない。NFL のサラリーキャップは記憶に基づき未照合。

I'd like to talk about the time I waited for a new laptop. My old one broke down just before a big project, so I ordered a new one online, and, um, the website said it'd take three days. It actually took nearly two weeks, because it got stuck at customs.

While I was waiting, I borrowed my sister's old computer, which was, honestly, painfully slow. I got into the habit of writing my code on paper first and only typing it in when I was sure about it, which sounds old-fashioned, but it made me think much more carefully.

How did I feel? Well, at first I was really annoyed, but looking back, I think that wait was quite good for me. It made me realise how much I'd been relying on the computer to think for me.

  • Reading: vi(passengers)・vii(timetable)は段落 B の語。 Q6 は How long → 期間
  • Listening: Q8〜10 の正解は "It wasn't." "Personally, I think" "But" の直後。
