Day 177 — Reading: Talking Across Valleys — What Whistled Languages Reveal

2026-10-13 Phase 4 — Band 7.0 目標 Reading(火曜) 模試形式 20分 | YES/NO/NOT GIVEN + Matching Information + Sentence Endings | 13問

背景知識

前回(Day171)とのつながり

Day164(TFNG・Matching Features・Summary)と Day171(Matching Headings・Multiple Choice・Short Answer)で、公式の11形式のうち6形式を扱いました。今日は残り5形式(YES/NO/NOT GIVEN・Matching Information・Matching Sentence Endings・Sentence Completion・Diagram Label Completion)から 3つ を選びます。これで今期の模試形式で扱った形式は 9/11 になります(残り2つの扱いは末尾の「扱わなかった範囲」)。

今日いちばん大事な1点: YES/NO/NOT GIVEN は「事実」ではなく「筆者の考え」を照合する

TFNG(Day164)と YNNG は見た目がそっくりですが、照合する相手が違います。

TRUE/FALSE/NOT GIVENYES/NO/NOT GIVEN
照合する相手本文の 情報(事実)本文の 筆者の見解・主張
出やすい本文説明文・報告文論説・議論のある文(in my view / it is tempting to ... / Yet ...)

It is tempting to ... / ... and X frequently do.This, in my view, is a mistake.
Admittedly, ... / It would be rash to ...But it does suggest ...
It is often claimed that ... / They have certainly ...Yet ...
None of this means ...(否定の後ろに来る主張)

3形式の探し方の違い

設問形式本文の順番どおりか探す手がかり1問の目安罠
YES/NO/NOT GIVEN順番どおり設問の名詞(固有名詞)で場所を決め、述語と筆者の態度 を照合約1分半譲歩の部分を本音と取る/事実は書いてあるが筆者の評価はない(NG)

READING PASSAGE

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1–13, which are based on the reading passage below. The reading passage has seven paragraphs, A–G.

Talking Across Valleys: What Whistled Languages Reveal

AOn the Canary Island of La Gomera, a farmer standing on one side of a deep ravine can still send a detailed message to a neighbour on the other side without raising her voice or reaching for a phone. She does it by whistling. The system she uses, known as Silbo Gomero, is one of more than eighty whistled forms of speech that researchers have documented around the world, from the mountains of north-eastern Turkey to the forests of the Amazon and the highlands of southern Mexico. Most of these communities share a landscape of steep slopes, dense vegetation or scattered settlements, where a shout fades quickly but a sharp whistle carries for one or two kilometres, and in the right conditions considerably further.

BIt is tempting to describe such systems as separate languages, and travel writers frequently do. This, in my view, is a mistake. A whistler on La Gomera is not using a vocabulary of his own invention; he is speaking Spanish, transposed into a different kind of sound. Listeners who know no Spanish cannot follow a whistled conversation, however carefully they have studied the whistles themselves. A more accurate comparison is with writing: just as a written sentence is English or Arabic rather than a separate language called 'ink', a whistled sentence belongs to the spoken language it encodes.

CHow that encoding works depends on the spoken language. In tonal languages such as Mazatec in Mexico or Yoruba in West Africa, the pitch of each syllable already carries meaning, so the whistler largely reproduces the melody of the sentence, along with its rhythm and the length of its syllables. Non-tonal languages pose a harder problem, because their vowels and consonants are distinguished by the shape of the mouth rather than by pitch. Whistlers of Spanish or Turkish solve it by converting the changing resonances of the vocal tract, which a phonetician would call formants, into rising and falling pitch. Much detail is inevitably lost. Linguists disagree about how many distinct vowels Silbo preserves – estimates range from two to five – and listeners rely heavily on context to recover what the whistle leaves out.

DThat reliance has made whistled speech interesting to neuroscientists. For more than a century, the left hemisphere of the brain has been regarded as the dominant site of language processing in most people, while the right hemisphere is associated more strongly with pitch and melody. In 2015 the biopsychologist Onur Güntürkün and his colleagues tested listeners from Kuşköy, a farming village in the Black Sea region of Turkey whose residents call their whistled Turkish kuş dili, or 'bird language'. When the villagers heard spoken Turkish, the familiar left-hemisphere advantage appeared. When they heard whistled Turkish, it largely disappeared: both hemispheres contributed about equally. Admittedly, the result comes from a single community and a single language, and it would be rash to build a general theory on it. But it does suggest that the left-hemisphere dominance found in so many studies may owe something to the acoustic form in which language usually arrives, rather than reflecting a fixed property of language itself.

EThe future of whistled languages looks less certain than their scientific value. On La Gomera, use of Silbo fell sharply from the 1950s, partly as a result of economic decline, and in the following decades many families avoided it because it had come to be associated with rural poverty. Roads and, later, telephones removed much of its practical purpose. In Kuşköy, mobile phones are widely reported to have had the same effect, and estimates of how many people can still use bird language vary considerably.

FOfficial recognition has followed. Silbo became a compulsory subject in La Gomera's primary and secondary schools in 1999, and UNESCO added it to its list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2009; Turkish bird language was added to a UNESCO heritage list in 2017, and Kuşköy has held an annual whistling festival since 1997. It is often claimed that such measures have saved Silbo. They have certainly ensured that a generation of children on the island has learnt at least the basics. Yet a skill practised for an hour a week in a classroom is not the same as one used every day to summon help or to arrange the movement of animals across a valley. What schools preserve may prove to be a performance of identity rather than a means of communication.

GNone of this means the effort is wasted. Even as a performance, Silbo keeps alive a body of knowledge about how humans can adapt speech to an environment, and it gives researchers living speakers to study rather than recordings alone. The deeper lesson may be that language is less tied to the voice than we tend to assume. Wherever there is a reason to communicate and a channel that can carry a pattern, people seem able to find a way.

Questions 1–5

Do the following statements agree with the claims of the writer in the reading passage? Write YES if the statement agrees with the claims of the writer, NO if the statement contradicts the claims of the writer, NOT GIVEN if it is impossible to say what the writer thinks about this.

1
Comparing whistled speech with writing helps to show what whistled speech really is.
2
Whistling is easier to learn for speakers of tonal languages than for speakers of non-tonal languages.
3
The Kuşköy study provides a sufficient basis for a general theory of how the brain processes language.
4
The Kuşköy findings raise doubts about whether left-hemisphere dominance is a fixed feature of language.
5
Teaching Silbo in schools has restored it to the everyday role it once had.

Questions 6–9

Which paragraph contains the following information? Write the correct letter, A–G. NB You may use any letter more than once.

6
a reason why some families stopped using whistled speech
7
an explanation of how a language without tones is converted into whistles
8
a reference to the distance over which a whistle can be heard
9
a suggestion that whistled speech has value even if it is no longer used for daily communication

Questions 10–13

Complete each sentence with the correct ending, A–G, below.

A use both halves of the brain to a similar extent.
B turn changes in the shape of the mouth into changes in pitch.
C rely mainly on the left half of the brain.
D copy a pitch pattern that already distinguishes words.
E create vocabulary that has no spoken equivalent.
F depend on context to recover sounds the whistle cannot carry.
G need less practice than speakers of other languages.
10
Whistlers of tonal languages such as Mazatec mainly …
11
Whistlers of Spanish and Turkish …
12
Listeners to whistled Silbo …
13
When hearing whistled Turkish, listeners from Kuşköy appeared to …

解法ガイド(形式の切り替え方)

  1. 最初の3分で「譲歩と本音」に印をつける: 段落 B(It is tempting → in my view, is a mistake)、D(Admittedly → But it does suggest)、F(It is often claimed / certainly → Yet)、G(None of this means → ...)。
  4. Matching Information(Q6–9)は情報の種類に下線: a reason(理由)/an explanation of how(仕組み)/a reference to(触れているだけでよい)/a suggestion that(筆者の提案・示唆)。a reference は1語でも触れていれば答えになる一方、an explanation は仕組みの説明が要る

ヒント

YNNG では、筆者の意見が「譲歩の文」と「本音の文」のどちらに書かれているかを先に決める。Matching Information は「話題」ではなく「情報の種類」で段落を選ぶ。

  • Q1: 段落 B の最後の文は "A more accurate comparison is with writing" で始まる。筆者はこの比較を良いと思っているか
  • Q3: "Admittedly ... it would be rash to build a general theory on it"。rash(軽率な)は肯定か否定か
  • Q5: 段落 F の "They have certainly ensured ..." は筆者が認めた部分。その直後の Yet の文は何と言っているか
  • Q6: 段落 E と F はどちらも Silbo の「その後」の話。families が出てくるのはどちらか
  • Q9: 段落 F の最後は「授業で残るのは演技かもしれない」(否定的)。それでも価値があると言うのはどの段落か
  • Q2: 「学びやすさ」についての筆者の評価は本文のどこにもない
  • Q8: 段落 A の最後の文 "carries for one or two kilometres"
  • Q13: 段落 D で「左半球が有利」だったのは spoken Turkish を聞いたとき

モデル解答(正解・根拠・言い換え)

問正解本文の根拠判断のポイント(罠)
1YESB: "A more accurate comparison is with writing: ... a whistled sentence belongs to the spoken language it encodes."more accurate = 筆者が良いと評価。helps to show what it really is = belongs to the spoken language
2NOT GIVENC: "Non-tonal languages pose a harder problem"罠: 難しいのは 符号化(口笛への変換) の問題で、学習の易しさについて筆者は何も言っていない
3NOD: "Admittedly, the result comes from a single community and a single language, and it would be rash to build a general theory on it."sufficient basis ↔ rash to build a general theory。譲歩の文の中にある筆者自身の限定
4YESD: "But it does suggest that the left-hemisphere dominance ... may owe something to the acoustic form ... rather than reflecting a fixed property of language itself."raise doubts = may ... rather than reflecting a fixed property。But の後ろが本音
5NOF: "Yet a skill practised for an hour a week in a classroom is not the same as one used every day ... What schools preserve may prove to be a performance of identity rather than a means of communication."罠: 直前の "They have certainly ensured ..." だけを読むと YES に見える。Yet の後ろが本音
6EE: "many families avoided it because it had come to be associated with rural poverty"理由 = because。F も Silbo の「その後」だが、families の理由はない
7CC: "Whistlers of Spanish or Turkish solve it by converting the changing resonances of the vocal tract ... into rising and falling pitch."a language without tones = non-tonal language。仕組み(by converting ...)の説明がある
8AA: "a sharp whistle carries for one or two kilometres, and in the right conditions considerably further"distance = one or two kilometres。a reference なので1文でよい
9GG: "None of this means the effort is wasted. Even as a performance, Silbo keeps alive a body of knowledge ..."罠: F は「日常の通信ではなくなる」と言うだけで、価値の主張はない。even as a performance = even if no longer used for daily communication
10DC: "the pitch of each syllable already carries meaning, so the whistler largely reproduces the melody of the sentence"reproduces the melody = copy a pitch pattern、already carries meaning = already distinguishes words
11BC: "converting the changing resonances of the vocal tract ... into rising and falling pitch" / "distinguished by the shape of the mouth"本文の専門語(formants)を一般語(shape of the mouth)で言い換えている
12FC: "listeners rely heavily on context to recover what the whistle leaves out"rely heavily on = depend on、what the whistle leaves out = sounds the whistle cannot carry
13AD: "When they heard whistled Turkish, it largely disappeared: both hemispheres contributed about equally."罠は C: 左半球が有利だったのは spoken Turkish を聞いたとき(条件が違う)

正答の内訳: YNNG は YES 2・NO 2・NG 1。Matching Information は E・C・A・G(B・D・F は不使用。NB で同じ段落を2回使える形式だが今日は重複なし)。Sentence Endings で使わない語尾は C・E・G(C は条件違い、E は段落 B と矛盾、G は本文に記述なし)。

モデル解答の解説

譲歩と本音の対応表(今日の主役)

段落譲歩(筆者が一度認める・他人の意見)本音(筆者の主張)対応する設問
BIt is tempting to describe such systems as separate languages, and travel writers frequently do.This, in my view, is a mistake. ... A more accurate comparison is with writingQ1(YES)
DAdmittedly, the result comes from a single community ... it would be rash to build a general theory on it.But it does suggest that ... may owe something to the acoustic formQ3(NO)・Q4(YES)
FIt is often claimed that such measures have saved Silbo. They have certainly ensured ...Yet a skill practised for an hour a week ... is not the sameQ5(NO)
GNone of this means the effort is wasted.Even as a performance, Silbo keeps alive ...Q9(G)

読み方の規則: 「他人の意見(travel writers / It is often claimed)」と「筆者が認めた限定(Admittedly / certainly)」は、どちらも But / Yet の後ろ で修正される。YNNG で筆者の意見を聞かれたら、まず But / Yet の後ろを読む。

例外に注意: Q3 は譲歩の文の中に筆者自身の判断(it would be rash)がある。Admittedly の文は「筆者が本当に認めている限定」なので、譲歩=筆者の意見ではない、ではない。正確には「譲歩の文は筆者の意見の 一部(限定)、But の後ろは 主張」。Q3 と Q4 は同じ段落から YES と NO が1つずつ出る組になっている。

NO と NOT GIVEN の分け方(Q2)

Q5 を YES にする"They have certainly ensured ..."
Matching Information を最初に解いて時間切れ設問番号順に解く順番どおりでない形式は最後。順番どおりの形式で本文を精読してから

残り5形式から Sentence Completion を入れるDay171 の Short Answer と「本文の語を写す・語数制限」の点で探し方がほぼ同じ。同じ技能を2回続けるより、探し方が違う Sentence Endings(語尾の選択)を優先今期最後の日曜(10/18)の復習で短縮版として入れる
