Day 160 — Part 2: 二重否定・緩叙法と「Would you mind」系の肯否反転

Part 2 — Phase 5

Phase 5
  • 否定を2つ数えたら「+」に畳む: not + un- / no reason + shouldn't / not without
  • Yes/No は「事実」に付く: Would you mind?
Only if / Well, / I'd rather not

It's not unlikely that ...
Isn't it uncommon ...?
not without its problems問題はある「問題が無い」
There's no reason we shouldn't ...…
I can't say I disagree(控えめに)賛成「反対」
I wouldn't be surprised if ...

軸2: Would you mind 系の Yes/No

Would you mind if I ...?Not at all. / No, go ahead.I'd rather you didn't.
Do you mind ...ing?No, not at all.I'd rather not.
You wouldn't object to ..., would you?No, I'd be happy to.Actually, I would.
"No problem."

Q6: can't
Q8: not without problems=

Q1-B / Q2-A / Q3-C / Q4-A / Q5-B / Q6-C / Q7-A / Q8-B / Q9-C / Q10-A

Q1. Would you mind if I moved our one-on-one to Thursday?
B ✅ "Not at all — just send me an updated invite." — mind(嫌がる)を Not at all で否定=「全然かまわない」。
A ✗ TRAP "Yes, Thursday works fine for me." — 極性矛盾: Would you mind への Yes は「嫌です」。
C ✗ TRAP "I moved into the new office on Thursday."
Q2. It's not unlikely that the shipment will clear customs before Monday, is it?
A ✅ "No, it should get through by Friday afternoon." — not unlikely=「たぶん通る」。
B ✗ TRAP "No, there's no chance it'll arrive before Monday."
C ✗ TRAP "The customer complained about the shipping cost."
Q3. Do you mind sharing your screen during the client demo?
mind=嫌がる → 断るなら I'd rather not (デモ中に画面共有してもらえますか)
C ✅ "I'd rather not — my laptop's been freezing all morning."
A ✗ TRAP "No, I'd prefer not to share it." — 極性矛盾: Do you mind への No は「かまわない(共有する)」。
B ✗ TRAP "Yes, the demo went really well."
Q4. Isn't it uncommon for the board to approve budgets this quickly?
Isn't it uncommon? → =
A ✅ "It is — they usually take at least two meetings."
B ✗ TRAP "Yes, the budget was common knowledge."
C ✗ TRAP "No, it's rare for them to approve anything so fast."
Q5. There's no reason we shouldn't renew the contract with Harlow Logistics, is there?
B ✅ "Well, their on-time rate did drop to 84 percent last quarter."
A ✗ TRAP "Right, we shouldn't renew it." Right(同意)と中身が逆。
C ✗ TRAP "The logistics conference is in Harlow next year."
Q6. I can't say I disagree with the new travel policy.
C ✅ "Neither can I — the daily allowance finally covers city hotels." — 否定文(can't)への同調は Neither can I。
A ✗ TRAP "So do I — it's far too strict."
B ✗ TRAP "The travel agency is closed on weekends."
Q7. You wouldn't object to presenting the quarterly figures, would you?
object=反対する → No → 反対しない=快諾 (四半期の数字の発表、反対しないよね?)
A ✅ "No, I'd be happy to."
B ✗ TRAP "Yes, the figures were higher than projected."
C ✗ TRAP "Yes, I'd be glad to present them."
Q8. The new scheduling software isn't without its problems.
B ✅ "Right, it still double-books the conference rooms." — not without problems=「
A ✗ TRAP "Great, so we can roll it out company-wide today." —
C ✗ TRAP "I scheduled the software training for 3 P.M."
Q9. Wouldn't it make sense to hold the product launch after the trade show?
Wouldn't it make sense? → =〜
C ✅ "Only if the prototypes are ready by then."
A ✗ TRAP "Yes, the trade show booth is on the second floor."
B ✗ TRAP "No, it made a lot of sense."
Q10. I wouldn't be surprised if the vendor raised its prices again.
A ✅ "Neither would I — they've done it twice this year." — wouldn't に合わせた Neither would I。
B ✗ TRAP "Yes, I was very surprised by the new prices."
C ✗ TRAP "The vendor rose early to catch the train." — 音の類似(raised / rose): raise(上げる・他動詞)と rise(上がる・起きる・自動詞)の過去形の取り違え。

Would you mind ...? Not at all / No, go ahead
Isn't it uncommon ...? It is / Yes
I can't say I disagree に So do I と返す「私もそう思う」=So do I と丸暗記している相手が否定形なら Neither。

Would you mind 単独却下Day 060(Phase 1)で基本形は既出。
・口語での揺れ: "Would you mind?"
