Writing Task 2 — Two-part Question Essay

テーマは Packaging Waste(包装ゴミの増加)。

What problems does this cause? What measures could be taken to solve them?
What are the causes of this trend? What effects does it have on society?
Why is this happening? What can be done about it?
Two-part Question Essay

In many countries, the amount of packaging waste, particularly single-use plastic packaging, generated by households and businesses is increasing rapidly.

What problems does this cause? What measures could be taken to reduce packaging waste?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Band 5.5 vs Band 6.0 の差:
Band 5.5 → "There are many problems and many solutions."(抽象的で具体性なし・語数の偏り)
Band 6.0 → "In conclusion, although the growth of packaging waste poses serious environmental and health risks, a combination of stricter regulation, financial incentives, and greater consumer awareness could substantially mitigate the problem."

Two-part Question Essay

Over the past few decades, the volume of packaging waste, particularly single-use plastics, generated by households and businesses has risen sharply in many countries. This essay will outline the principal problems associated with this trend before discussing several measures that governments and consumers could adopt to curb it.

The most immediate problem is the burden placed on waste disposal systems. Much of this packaging ends up in landfill sites, where it can take hundreds of years to decompose, or is incinerated, releasing harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. A further concern is the damage inflicted on marine ecosystems; discarded plastic frequently finds its way into rivers and oceans, where it breaks down into microplastics that are ingested by marine life and, ultimately, enter the human food chain. In addition, the manufacture of packaging materials consumes substantial quantities of fossil fuels, exacerbating the broader problem of climate change.

Fortunately, a range of measures could help to address this issue. Governments could introduce legislation that obliges manufacturers to reduce excessive packaging or to use recyclable and biodegradable materials instead of conventional plastics, an approach often referred to as extended producer responsibility. Deposit-return schemes, whereby consumers receive a small refund for returning containers, have proven remarkably effective at boosting recycling rates in several European countries. On an individual level, consumers can play their part by choosing products with minimal packaging and by supporting retailers that operate refill schemes. Public awareness campaigns highlighting the environmental cost of packaging waste would further reinforce these efforts by encouraging more sustainable consumer habits.

In conclusion, although the growth of packaging waste poses serious environmental and health risks, a combination of stricter regulation, financial incentives, and greater consumer awareness could substantially mitigate the problem.

Introductionで "This essay will outline the principal problems... before discussing several measures..." それぞれに具体例(landfill/microplastics、extended producer responsibility/deposit-return scheme)を添えて十分に展開している。
