Day 111 — Writing Task 2: Academic Vocabulary で書くBody Paragraph

2026-08-03 Phase 2 — Band 6.0 目標 Writing Task 2(月曜) Academic Vocabulary | Public Transport vs Roads | 40分

Writing Task 2 — Academic Vocabulary(Body Paragraph)

(Band 6.0 vs 7.0 vs 8.0)

Band

Body Paragraph

③ 高スコアCollocation動詞+名詞の自然な組み合わせを使う"have a detrimental effect on"

(Band Descriptor)

Collocation

Collocation
A new metro line could alleviate traffic congestion significantly.
Public transport investment helps curb carbon emissions.
have a detrimental effect on〜に悪影響を及ぼすExcessive road building can have a detrimental effect on air quality.

"One of the most compelling reasons to favour public transport is its potential to alleviate traffic congestion and curb harmful emissions. When cities expand their road infrastructure, this often triggers a phenomenon known as induced demand... By contrast, a well-funded... network can absorb a substantial proportion of commuters..."

[Body 2 —
"Equally significant is the role that accessible public transport plays in fostering economic and social equity. Reliable bus and rail services enable individuals from lower-income households to access employment opportunities... Admittedly, road construction cannot be abandoned altogether, since freight transport... however, this practical necessity should not overshadow..."

Governments across the world face a difficult choice between expanding road networks and investing more heavily in public transport systems. While the construction of new roads may bring short-term convenience for private car users, I firmly believe that prioritising investment in public transport would yield far greater benefits for both the economy and the environment.

One of the most compelling reasons to favour public transport is its potential to alleviate traffic congestion and curb harmful emissions. When cities expand their road infrastructure, this often triggers a phenomenon known as induced demand, whereby the availability of additional road space merely encourages more private vehicle use, thereby exacerbating congestion in the medium term. By contrast, a well-funded, efficient train or bus network can absorb a substantial proportion of commuters who would otherwise rely on cars, resulting in a marked reduction in both journey times and carbon emissions. Given the mounting evidence linking vehicle exhaust to respiratory illness, this environmental argument alone provides a persuasive case for reallocating funds towards public transport.

Equally significant is the role that accessible public transport plays in fostering economic and social equity. Reliable bus and rail services enable individuals from lower-income households, who may not be able to afford a car, to access employment opportunities, educational institutions and healthcare facilities that would otherwise be out of reach. Furthermore, investment in public transport infrastructure tends to stimulate local economies, as improved connectivity encourages businesses to establish themselves near transport hubs. Admittedly, road construction cannot be abandoned altogether, since freight transport and rural communities with limited population density still depend heavily on road networks; however, this practical necessity should not overshadow the broader societal advantages that public transport investment offers.

In conclusion, although new roads continue to serve certain practical purposes, I maintain that channelling government funds primarily into public transport represents the more effective long-term strategy, given its capacity to reduce congestion, lower emissions and promote equitable access to opportunity.

Body Paragraphで "very important" "a lot of" "big problem" を多用する 中学・高校レベルの語彙のまま押し通してしまう 学術語(crucial, numerous, a pressing issue等)に置き換える
"the reduction of the amount of the pollution of the air"(名詞化しすぎ) 名詞化=高得点と思い込み、動詞を無理やり名詞にする 動詞文と名詞文をバランスよく混ぜる。
"There are many reasons for this."(曖昧なTopic Sentence) パラグラフの主張を明確化する意識が不足 1文目で「何について論じるか」をacademic collocationを使って明示する

発展: 同じBody 1を、今度は "induced demand" を使わずに別のcollocation(例: "exacerbate congestion in the long run")で書き直してみる
