Day 128 — Writing Task 1: Map — The Town of Elmswood (2004–2024)

Day114(テーマ#1: Process Diagram)・Day121(テーマ#3: Mixed Graph)に続き、今日はPhase 3 Writing Task1の2つ目のテーマ「Map(地図変化)の描写」です。

Map
1. 折れ線グラフのような「数値の増減」ではなく、建物・土地利用の変化を描写する → 動詞の中心は"rise/fall"ではなく受動態の変化動詞(be replaced by / be converted into / be demolished / be constructed)
2. 場所を正確に伝えるには位置関係の前置詞(to the north of, adjacent to, opposite, on the outskirts of)が不可欠 → 誤ると読み手はどこの話か分からなくなり、Task Achievementが大きく減点される

Coherence & Cohesion (CC):
Lexical Resource (LR): 変化動詞(be replaced by, be converted into, be demolished, be expanded, be relocated)と位置前置詞を正確に使い分けられているか
Grammatical Range (GRA):

Intro The two maps illustrate how the town of Elmswood changed over a twenty-year period, from 2004 to 2024.

Overview Overall, the most significant development was the large-scale replacement of farmland and industrial land with residential and commercial buildings, alongside a considerable expansion of the road network. The general course of the river and the original street pattern, however, remained largely unchanged.

Body 1 In 2004, the northern part of the town was occupied by open farmland, while a factory stood on the west bank of the river, directly opposite the town library on the east bank. By 2024, the farmland had been completely converted into a new housing estate, Elm Meadows, and the factory had been demolished and replaced by a shopping mall. The library was relocated, and a supermarket was constructed on its former site.

Body 2 Further changes took place in the south. The small housing estate in the south-west was extended, whereas the car park in the south-east was converted into a bus station. In addition, a new ring road was built around the eastern and southern edges of the town, and a second bridge was constructed in the north to link the new housing estate to this road. A small park was also added beside the river near the original bridge.

MODEL ANSWER — Band 7.5~8.0

Intro The two maps illustrate how the town of Elmswood changed over a twenty-year period, from 2004 to 2024.

Overview Overall, the most significant development was the large-scale replacement of farmland and industrial land with residential and commercial buildings, alongside a considerable expansion of the road network. The general course of the Elm River and the original street pattern, however, remained largely unchanged.

Body 1 In 2004, the northern part of the town was occupied by open farmland, while a small primary school stood in the north-east, next to a modest playing field. A factory stood on the west bank of the river, directly opposite the town library on the east bank. By 2024, the farmland had been completely converted into a new housing estate known as Elm Meadows, and the primary school had been expanded into a secondary school with a larger playing field. Meanwhile, the factory had been demolished and replaced by a shopping mall, and the library was relocated, with a supermarket subsequently constructed on its former site.

Body 2 Further changes took place in the south of the town. The small housing estate in the south-west was extended southwards, whereas the car park in the south-east was converted into a bus station. In addition, a new ring road was built around the eastern and southern edges of Elmswood, and a second bridge, Riverside Bridge, was constructed in the north to link the new housing estate to this road. A small riverside park was also added near the original Mill Bridge, adjacent to the town centre.

Task Achievement

Coherence & Cohesion

"Overall, the most significant development was..."

Lexical Resource

  • be converted into / be replaced by / be demolished / be relocated — 4種類の変化動詞を使い分け、単調な"changed"の反復を避けている
Grammatical Range

  • "...had been completely converted into..."
  • "...whereas the car park in the south-east was converted into a bus station" — 対比の従属接続詞whereasを用いた複文
  • "...with a supermarket subsequently constructed on its former site" — 分詞構文(with + 名詞 + 過去分詞)による付帯状況の描写
  • "a second bridge, Riverside Bridge, was constructed..."

"The factory was demolishing in 2024."(能動的な進行形の誤用) 変化動詞を能動態・進行形で書いてしまう "The factory was demolished."(受動態・過去形)
"There is a farmland in the north in 2004."(There is構文の多用) 位置関係を"There is/was"だけで説明しようとする "Open farmland occupied the northern part of the town in 2004."
"In north, a school was."(前置詞の欠落・語順の誤り) 方角を表す名詞の前に冠詞・前置詞をつけ忘れる "In the north-east, a school stood."
