Listening Day — 土曜

Section
・談話標識(discourse markers)で構造を予測する: "The first is...", "A third function is...", "Let's move on to..."
・同格・言い換えによる補足説明: "that is, devices that use..."
Q1–10: Note Completion(講義ノート穴埋め) — 3語以内および/または数字

(First, Second, Let's move on to...)

🎓 Section 4 — Lecture by Dr. Elena Foster

Dr. Foster: Good morning, everyone. Today I want to talk about one of the most remarkable adaptations found in nature — bioluminescence, or the ability of living organisms to produce their own light. This phenomenon is especially common in the deep ocean, where sunlight barely penetrates past a depth of around 200 metres.

Let's start with the basic chemistry. Bioluminescence occurs when a molecule called luciferin reacts with oxygen, and this reaction is catalysed by an enzyme known as luciferase. Actually, in some species the enzyme is slightly different and is called a photoprotein instead, but the underlying chemical process is very similar. The reaction releases energy in the form of light rather than heat, which is why it's sometimes described as "cold light."

Now, it's estimated that around 90% of animals living below 1,000 metres are capable of producing light in some form. That's a staggering proportion when you consider how diverse marine life is at that depth.

So why would a creature want to glow in complete darkness? There are actually several functions. The first is counter-illumination — many mid-water fish have light-producing organs on their undersides that match the faint light coming from above, which helps them avoid being seen as a silhouette by predators looking upward.

The second function is predation — the most famous example is the anglerfish, which dangles a glowing lure in front of its mouth to attract smaller prey close enough to catch. Interestingly, in some anglerfish species, the light isn't even produced by the fish itself — it comes from colonies of bioluminescent bacteria living symbiotically inside the lure.

A third function is communication — certain species, such as ostracods, use light signals for mate attraction. Each species tends to produce a slightly different flash pattern, almost like a code, which helps individuals find the correct mate in the darkness.

Now, one creature I should mention is the lanternfish. Lanternfish are actually the most abundant vertebrates in the deep sea in terms of biomass, and they use light-producing organs called photophores, arranged in specific patterns along their bodies, partly for counter-illumination and partly, we believe, for species recognition.

Let's move on to research challenges. Studying bioluminescent organisms is notoriously difficult. First, deep-sea expeditions are extremely expensive — a single research cruise using a remotely operated vehicle can cost several hundred thousand dollars. Second, many deep-sea creatures are extremely fragile; when brought to the surface, the change in pressure often damages their light-producing organs, so researchers frequently need to study them in situ, using submersibles equipped with low-light cameras, rather than in a laboratory.

Despite these challenges, there's growing interest in the practical applications of bioluminescence research. One promising area is biomedical imaging — luciferase genes have already been used as so-called "reporter genes" in laboratory research, allowing scientists to track the activity of specific cells by attaching a light-producing marker to them. Another possible application, still at an early stage, is the development of biosensors — that is, devices that use bioluminescent reactions to detect the presence of particular chemicals or pollutants in water.

Right, let's now look at some images of deep-sea specimens before we discuss the evolutionary origins of this trait in more detail...

The first is...", "The second function is...", "Let's move on to..."
  3. 言い換え表現("that is, devices that use...")

Lexical Resource(語彙)

Grammatical Range & Accuracy(文法)

講義全体を通して "The first is...", "The second function is...", "A third function is..."
言い換え・同格構文("that is, devices that use...")

Note Completion(講義形式)談話標識(First, Second, Let's move on to...)

Q6に "the fish itself" のように書く "the light isn't even produced by the fish itself" という否定の直後に正解が来ることを見逃す 否定の後に続く bioluminescent bacteria が正解
