Day 130 復習Good morning. Today's topic is vertical farming — growing crops in stacked layers indoors rather than in open fields. Traditional agriculture requires roughly one hectare of land to produce, say, 5 tonnes of lettuce per year; a vertical farm using the same footprint can produce more than 20 times that amount, because growing trays are stacked as many as ten layers high.
Let's look at how it works. Plants are grown hydroponically — that is, without soil, with nutrients delivered directly through water — under LED lighting tuned to the specific wavelengths plants need for photosynthesis. Actually, in some newer experimental systems, aeroponics is used instead, where roots are misted with a nutrient solution rather than submerged, but hydroponics remains far more common in commercial operations today.
So why hasn't vertical farming replaced traditional agriculture? The first obstacle is energy cost — running LED lighting around the clock is extremely expensive, and in most current operations, electricity accounts for well over half of total running costs. A second obstacle is the limited range of crops that are commercially viable; leafy greens and herbs grow well, but staple crops like wheat and rice are, for now, far too energy-intensive to grow this way profitably.
Let's move on to a promising recent development — researchers have started integrating on-site renewable energy, particularly rooftop solar, to offset some of the electricity costs.

Day 127 / 129 復習"The new vertical farming system not only reduced land use but also cut water consumption by half."
"Rarely a farm achieves such high yields without significant energy costs."
"______ it not been for the recent drop in LED costs, vertical farming would still be prohibitively expensive for most crops."
Reading: Matching Headings(3問)
Day 126 復習Paragraph A. The rise of urban beekeeping over the past decade has been driven largely by ecological concern. As reports of declining wild pollinator populations have become more widespread, many city residents have taken up beekeeping as a way of directly supporting local pollination, while a smaller but growing number are drawn simply by the appeal of harvesting their own honey from rooftops and balconies.
Paragraph B. In practice, however, hobbyist beekeepers face several obstacles. Urban hives are more susceptible to certain diseases, partly because of the higher density of colonies in a small area, and forage — the flowers and blossoms bees rely on for nectar — can be scarce or unpredictable in built-up environments, forcing many keepers to supplement their bees' diet artificially during lean periods.
Paragraph C. Perhaps the most contentious issue, though, is how tightly the practice should be regulated. Some city councils require hives to be registered and inspected, arguing that this is necessary to prevent disease outbreaks and to protect neighbours who may be allergic to stings; beekeeping associations, meanwhile, argue that overly strict rules discourage newcomers and do little to address the underlying ecological problem the hobby was meant to help solve.
i. The ecological motivations behind a growing hobby
ii. Disagreement over how tightly beekeeping should be controlled
iii. A comparison with rural apiculture practices
iv. Practical obstacles facing hobbyist beekeepers
v. The economic value of honey exports

Part A(Section 4
- Q2とQ3はDay130の「luciferin/luciferase」「photoprotein/photophore」と同じ紛らわしい専門用語のペア構造。"Actually, in some newer... systems, X is used instead... but Y remains far more common" という譲歩構文に注意し、主流の方(hydroponically)と例外の方(aeroponics)を混同しない
Part B(倒置)
Q5: "Not only did the new vertical farming system reduce land use, but it also cut water consumption by half." 正しくは "Rarely does a farm achieve..."。Q7: 「If it had not been for」の倒置なので過去完了の Had。
Part C(Matching Headings)
iii(田舎の養蜂との比較)とv(蜂蜜輸出の経済価値)はディストラクター。
Part D(Coherence)
Part E(Map)
"North of the station" のように位置を明示し、"was converted into" のような受動態の変化動詞を使う。
Part F(倒置)
"Rarely do people question whether remote work is here to stay" や "Not only has remote work changed where people work, but it has also changed how they collaborate" のような形が使いやすい。

- Part F
- Part A: 20倍 → hydroponically(主流)→ aeroponics(例外)→ 電気代が半分超。
- Part E: "North of the station, the open field that existed in 2005 had been converted into a bus depot by 2023, with a new car park constructed directly adjacent to it."
- Part F: "Rarely do people doubt that remote work is here to stay — and not only has it reshaped where people work, but it has also changed how teams communicate."
- Part D モデル骨格 → "One of the clearest advantages of remote work is the time employees save by not commuting. This is largely because... This is well illustrated by... As a result, ..."
- Part F モデル骨格 → "I'd say yes, largely. Rarely does a shift this significant reverse once it has taken hold. Not only has remote work improved flexibility, but it has also forced companies to rethink how they measure productivity."

"One of the clearest advantages of remote work is the time employees save by no longer commuting. This is largely because eliminating a daily journey — often an hour or more each way in large cities — frees up time for rest, family, or focused work. This benefit is well illustrated by surveys showing that many remote employees report using saved commuting time to start work earlier or exercise regularly. Over time, this extra time is likely to improve both wellbeing and productivity."
"North of the station, the open field that existed in 2005 had been converted into a bus depot by 2023, with a new car park constructed directly adjacent to it."
"I'd say yes, largely. Rarely does a shift this significant reverse once it has taken hold, especially now that so many companies have already invested in the infrastructure to support it. Not only has remote work improved flexibility for employees, but it has also forced companies to rethink how they measure productivity, moving away from simply tracking hours in an office. That said, I doubt it will completely replace office-based work — a hybrid model seems more realistic."

| Part B Q6で "Rarely does a farm achieves" のように助動詞と動詞の両方を残してしまう | 倒置で助動詞を補う際、元の動詞を原形に戻し忘れる | "Rarely does a farm achieve"(動詞は原形) |
| Part E で "North of the station is a bus depot in 2023."
