Writing Task 2 — Common Mistakes(日本人特有のエラー集)

The government should invest in public transportation.
I read a book about environment yesterday. I read a book about the environment yesterday.
Car is convenient but causes pollution. Cars are convenient but cause pollution.

The number of car have increased. The number of cars has increased.
Many information is available online."information"は不可算だが「情報」は数えられる感覚があるMuch information is available online.
Each of the options have advantages."each of + 複数名詞"の主語が単数扱いという規則を知らないEach of the options has advantages.

I am interested to environmental issues.「〜に興味がある」の「に」をtoに機械的に対応させるI am interested in environmental issues.
This will lead to reduce traffic congestion.「〜につながる」からtoを連想し動詞原形を続けるThis will lead to reducing traffic congestion.
Discuss about the advantages「〜について議論する」の「について」を余分に訳すDiscuss the advantages

do a decision「決定をする」を"do"+名詞で直訳するmake a decision
take an effort「努力をする」を"take"+名詞で直訳するmake an effort
raise the quality of life「上げる」の第一義であるraiseを機械的に当てはめるimprove / enhance the quality of life

A car have accident happened yesterday is famous. The car that had an accident yesterday is famous.
Always I take the train to school. I always take the train to school.
Government should more invest in trains.「もっと」を動詞の直前に置く日本語の語順を転移させるGovernment should invest more in trains.
⑥ 口語表現("a lot of", "get better", 短縮形 "don't")がAcademic Writingに混入する現象。⑦はDay139の「CC結束装置監査」で扱った"But/Because/So"依存と同根で、従属接続詞(although, given that, provided that)や分詞構文(Day141)で代替する意識が必要。

[Introduction]
"Whether governments should prioritise public transportation over road construction is a subject of ongoing policy debate. I would argue that, while road investment retains some justification in certain contexts, the balance should clearly favour public transportation."

[Conclusion]

Introduction
Whether governments should prioritise public transportation over road construction is a subject of ongoing policy debate. I would argue that, while road investment retains some justification in certain contexts, the balance should clearly favour public transportation.

Body 1 — Public Transportation Should Be Prioritised
The primary argument in favour of investing in trains and buses lies in their capacity to relieve traffic congestion and reduce environmental harm simultaneously. Cities that have expanded their rail networks, such as those with extensive metro systems, have generally seen commuting times fall even as urban populations continue to grow. Moreover, public transportation produces substantially lower carbon emissions per passenger than private vehicles, meaning that a shift away from road-centric planning would directly support broader climate goals. For these reasons, sustained investment in public transit represents one of the most efficient uses of limited infrastructure budgets.

Body 2 — A Conditional Case for Road Investment
This is not to suggest that road construction is never justified. In rural and suburban areas where population density cannot support frequent bus or train services, private cars often remain the only practical means of transport, and neglecting road maintenance in such regions would disproportionately harm residents with no viable alternative. Road investment can therefore still be defended, provided that it does not come at the expense of public transit budgets in areas where trains and buses are genuinely viable.

Conclusion
In conclusion, although a degree of continued road investment is defensible in low-density regions, governments should, on balance, direct the greater share of infrastructure spending towards public transportation, given its clear advantages in reducing both congestion and emissions.

"the balance", "the primary argument", "a shift away from road-centric planning" のように、可算・不可算・総称の区別を一貫して正確に処理している。

"Cities that have expanded their rail networks... have generally seen commuting times fall" のように、複数主語(Cities)に一致した動詞選択が一貫している。

"relieve traffic congestion"("do congestion"のような直訳を回避)、"represents one of the most efficient uses of..."(動詞句"use efficiently"を名詞化)など、直訳では出てこない自然な組み合わせと名詞化表現を多用している。

CC(推定 Band 7.0〜7.5): Body 1末尾「efficient uses of limited infrastructure budgets」→ Body 2冒頭「This is not to suggest that road construction is never justified」で、接続詞に頼らず自然に反論を導入している。

Government should build more train and bus instead of road for car. I agree with this opinion very much.

First, if government invest to public transportation, traffic congestion will decrease. The number of car have increased in many city, so road always crowded. If people use train more, they don't need to drive car every day. This will lead to reduce pollution too, because train produce less gas than car.

However, in countryside, there is no enough train or bus. People who live in countryside must have car for go to work or hospital. So government cannot stop build road completely. Government should think about each area's situation carefully.

In conclusion, I think public transportation is more important than road in most case, but countryside is different situation.

"Government should" → The government should / "for car" → for cars / "in many city" → in many cities
"The number of car have increased" → The number of cars has increased / "build more train and bus" → build more trains and buses
"invest to public transportation" → invest in public transportation / "lead to reduce pollution" → lead to reducing pollution
"train produce less gas" → trains produce fewer emissions(口語的な"gas"は不正確)/ "in most case" → in most cases
"People who live in countryside must have car for go to work" → ...must have a car to go to work(不定詞句の誤用)
⑥ Register
"I agree with this opinion very much" は口語的すぎる強調 → "I strongly agree with this view" などが適切
"So government cannot stop..."
"if government invest to public transportation, traffic congestion will decrease" は条件節が動詞中心で冗長 → "Increased investment in public transportation would decrease traffic congestion."

(The number of, Each of など)を見失う 主語の核となる名詞を特定してから動詞を選ぶ
動詞+名詞のコロケーションを直訳する do a decision, take an effort のように意味だけで組み合わせる make a decision, make an effort のように正しい動詞との組を暗記する
