Day 150 — Speaking: Work & Career(仕事・キャリア)

What/When→Why→Mixed Conditional(もし〜していなかったら)の構造で語れるか
1. 過去の条件 → 現在の結果 — If + 過去完了形, would + 動詞の原形 — 例: "If I had studied computer science, I would be working in tech right now."(過去にそうしていたら今頃は〜だっただろう)
2. 現在(一般的)の条件 → 過去の結果 — If + 過去形, would have + 過去分詞 — 例: "If I weren't so risk-averse, I would have taken that job offer."(今こういう性格でなければ、あのとき〜していただろう)

Media & Social Media(Day 115)→ Environment & Sustainability(Day 122)→ Technology & Innovation(Day 129)→ Culture & Tradition(Day 136)→ Education & Learning(Day 143)と扱ってきましたが、今回は 新しいトピック「仕事・キャリアの決断とその後の人生」 に取り組みます。

Part 1

  • Do you currently work, or are you a student?
  • What do you like most about your job or field of study?
  • Would you like to change your career in the future?
  • Do you think it's more important to enjoy your job or to earn a high salary?

Part 2 Cue Card

CUE CARD
Describe a career-related decision that changed the direction of your life.
  • what the decision was
  • when you made it
  • why you made this decision
and explain how your life might be different if you hadn't made this decision.
最後の項目(もしこの決断をしていなかったら)では、Mixed Conditionals(過去の条件→現在の結果、または現在の状態→過去の結果)を必ず使ってください。

Part 3

Phase 4ルール: 各回答に、Mixed Conditional文(If + 過去完了, would + 原形 または If + 過去形, would have + 過去分詞)を最低1つ、これまで学んだDiscourse Markers(Well, / So, など)と組み合わせて入れましょう。
  • Do you think people should choose a job they love over one that pays well?
  • How has technology changed the way people work over the past decade?
  • Is it better to stay loyal to one company for your entire career, or to switch jobs frequently?
  • What impact does remote work have on people's work-life balance?

  • 決断の理由を語る動詞: "reconsider", "transfer well", "take a leap of faith"

If commuting time simply disappeared, people would naturally have more time for family."

"Right, let me think..." one decision that really changed things for me was [決断の内容], which I made around [時期].

"Honestly," the main reason was [理由].

"If I hadn't" [過去の決断], "I would" [現在の状態] — or alternatively, "if I weren't" [現在の性格・状況], "I would have" [過去の別の選択].

"So, looking back," I'm genuinely glad I made that choice.

Part 1

Q1: Do you currently work, or are you a student?
MODEL — Band 7.5~8.0

Well, I currently work as a software engineer at a mid-sized company. I've been in this role for about three years now, so I'm fairly settled into it at this point.

Q2: What do you like most about your job or field of study?
MODEL — Band 7.5~8.0

Honestly, what I enjoy most is the problem-solving aspect — there's something genuinely satisfying about untangling a bug that's been bothering me for hours and finally seeing it click into place.

Q3: Would you like to change your career in the future?
MODEL — Band 7.5~8.0

Not drastically, no, but I could see myself moving into a more architectural or leadership-focused role eventually, rather than staying purely hands-on with code forever.

Q4: Do you think it's more important to enjoy your job or to earn a high salary?
MODEL — Band 7.5~8.0

I'd say enjoyment matters more in the long run, because I've seen colleagues burn out chasing salary alone. That said, I recognise that's easier to say once your basic financial needs are already met.

(Cue Card)

MODEL ANSWER — Band 7.5~8.0 (approx. 240 words)

導入 Right, let me think... one decision that really changed the direction of my life was switching from a mechanical engineering degree to computer science, which I did about halfway through university.

What/When I made this decision in my second year, after I'd already completed most of the introductory mechanical engineering coursework. What made me reconsider was a single elective programming course — I remember spending an entire weekend debugging a small project purely for fun, and realising I'd never felt that engaged with any of my mechanical engineering assignments.

Why The main reason I made the switch, though, wasn't just enjoyment — it was also a practical one. I could see how quickly the software industry was growing, and I genuinely believed the skills would transfer well regardless of which direction I eventually took my career.

Mixed Conditional Now, as for how things might be different if I hadn't made that decision — honestly, if I hadn't switched majors back then, I would probably be working in a fairly traditional engineering role right now, one that's far more rigid in terms of how and where I could work. And going the other way, if I weren't the kind of person who gets uncomfortable staying in a role I'm not passionate about, I would never have taken the risk of switching in the first place, given how close I was to finishing the original degree.

締め So, looking back, it was without question the right call, even though it did cost me an extra year at university.

Part 3

Q1: Do you think people should choose a job they love over one that pays well?
MODEL — Band 7.5~8.0

Well, that's actually a genuinely difficult trade-off. I mean, if money weren't a real constraint for most people, I imagine far more of them would have chosen careers based purely on passion. But in practice, financial pressure shapes a lot of these decisions. So, on balance, I'd say people should aim for something they at least don't dread, even if it's not their absolute dream job, because chasing salary alone tends to lead to burnout eventually.

Q2: How has technology changed the way people work over the past decade?
MODEL — Band 7.5~8.0

Now, this is one where the change has genuinely been enormous. If cloud-based collaboration tools hadn't become so widespread over the last decade, remote work simply wouldn't be as viable an option as it is today. I mean, an entire generation of companies now operates with distributed teams, which would have been almost unthinkable fifteen years ago. So, I'd say technology hasn't just changed how people work — it's changed where they're even allowed to live while doing it.

Q3: Is it better to stay loyal to one company for your entire career, or to switch jobs frequently?
MODEL — Band 7.5~8.0

Right, I think this really depends on the industry. If someone had stayed at a single company for their whole career in a fast-moving field like tech, they would probably have missed out on significant salary growth, since switching jobs is often how people negotiate meaningfully higher pay. That said, in fields where deep institutional knowledge matters more, loyalty can genuinely pay off. So, I'd lean towards saying some job movement is healthy, but constant switching every year probably raises red flags too.

Q4: What impact does remote work have on people's work-life balance?
MODEL — Band 7.5~8.0

Well, for a lot of people it's been a huge positive — if commuting time simply disappeared from someone's day, they'd naturally have more time for family or rest. That said, I've also heard people say the boundary between work and home has gotten blurrier, since if you weren't physically leaving an office, you'd probably have kept checking emails long after you should have logged off. So, on balance, I'd say remote work improves balance for disciplined people but can actually worsen it for others.

Fluency & Coherence

Part 2では"Right, let me think..."

Grammatical Range

If I hadn't switched majors back then, I would probably be working in a fairly traditional engineering role right now."
If I weren't the kind of person who gets uncomfortable staying in a role I'm not passionate about, I would never have taken the risk of switching in the first place."

Pronunciation

If I would study harder, I would have a better job now. if節に"would"を誤って使用(二重would) If I had studied harder, I would have a better job now.
If I have studied abroad, I would be more confident now. If I had studied abroad, I would be more confident now.
If I had more money, I would have traveled more when I was young. If I had had more money, I would have traveled more when I was young.
If she is careful, she wouldn't have made that mistake. If she had been careful, she wouldn't have made that mistake.
If I would have known, I would have come. if節に"would have"を誤用(口語でよくある誤り) If I had known, I would have come.

(If you could start your career all over again, what would you change?)」
