Day 151 — Listening: Noise & Concentration Study — Section 3(2

Listening Day — 土曜 — Section 3 2周目

Section
・意見転換のシグナルが弱くなる: 1周目では "That's a fair point, although..." のように転換が明示されていたが、今回は "well... we ended up going with..."
Q1–6: Multiple Choice(多肢選択) — A/B/Cから選択
Q7–10: Matching(提案者の特定) — P/D/Aから選択

Section 3 — Tutorial: Study on Noise and Concentration in Open-Plan Offices

🎓 Section 3 — Tutorial between Priya, Daniel (students) and Dr. Ashworth (tutor)

Dr. Ashworth: Right, Priya, Daniel — let's see how the proposal for your workplace study is coming along.

Priya: So we're still looking at open-plan offices, but we've shifted a bit from where we started. Originally we wanted to measure how noise levels affect typing speed, but the more we looked into it, we realised typing speed doesn't really capture the kind of concentration loss people actually complain about.

Daniel: Right, and I'd actually pushed for something on multitasking ability at first, but... well, we ended up going with sustained attention instead — how long someone can stay focused on one task without being distracted.

Dr. Ashworth: Good, that's a more defensible measure. So how are you planning to measure that?

Priya: We were going to use a reading comprehension test — participants read a passage in a noisy environment and then answer questions on it afterwards.

Dr. Ashworth: That works, but a single test might not tell you much on its own. I'd combine it with something ongoing — a short survey participants fill in every hour, rating their own focus level.

Daniel: We did think about that, actually, but weren't sure it was necessary.

Dr. Ashworth: I think it strengthens the design considerably — self-report over time, alongside the one-off test.

Priya: Okay, we can build that in.

Dr. Ashworth: Now, which companies are you planning to approach?

Daniel: We want ones with open-plan floors, obviously, but Priya pointed out we should probably only include companies that also have some enclosed meeting rooms or quiet zones available, so we can compare within the same company rather than across totally different environments.

Priya: Right, and on top of that, we're only including people who've worked there for at least six months, so we're not picking up on "new job" anxiety mixed in with the noise issue.

Dr. Ashworth: Sensible. So — companies with both open-plan and enclosed spaces, and employees with six months' tenure — that narrows your sample quite a bit, but it'll be a much cleaner comparison.

Daniel: We'd thought about a shorter cutoff, like one month, but figured six is safer.

Dr. Ashworth: Agreed. Now — recruitment. How are you approaching companies?

Priya: We were going to email HR departments directly.

Dr. Ashworth: You could, though response rates on cold emails tend to be low. Do either of you have any existing contacts?

Daniel: Actually, my placement year was at a mid-sized tech firm — I could probably get us in the door there.

Dr. Ashworth: Use that. Start with a company you already have access to, then expand outward from there if you need a bigger sample.

Priya: That makes sense, it'll save us a lot of time.

Dr. Ashworth: Last thing — timeline. When's data collection?

Daniel: We were aiming to finish within three weeks.

Dr. Ashworth: For this design, I'd stretch that to four — the hourly self-report surveys mean you need people to stay engaged for longer, and that takes more coordination than a single test.

Priya: Four weeks it is, then.

Dr. Ashworth: Good. Send me the updated proposal by Friday.

6. What does Dr. Ashworth recommend about the data collection timeline?
P(Priya)/ D(Daniel)/ A(Dr. Ashworth)から選んでください。
🗣️ Who suggested it first?
7 Suggested combining an hourly self-report survey with the one-off reading test.
8 Pointed out that only companies with enclosed meeting rooms or quiet zones should be included.
9 Suggested using a personal contact from a placement year to recruit a company.
10 Suggested restricting participants to employees with at least six months' tenure.

  1. Danielの "I'd actually pushed for... but... well, we ended up going with..."

Matching(提案者の特定・伝聞に注意)攻略の基本

  1. 提案が本人の発言としてではなく、別の話者が代わりに報告する形("Priya pointed out we should probably only include...")

  • Q1 → B(sustained attention)
  • Q2 → C(multitasking ability — Daniel
  • Q3 → B(hourly self-report survey on focus level)
  • Q4 → B(open-plan かつ enclosed spaces の両方がある企業)
  • Q5 → C(six months)
  • Q6 → B(four weeks
  • Q7 → A(Dr. Ashworth: "I'd combine it with something ongoing — a short survey...")
  • Q8 → P(Priya: Danielの報告 "Priya pointed out we should probably only include companies that also have...")
  • Q9 → D(Daniel: "my placement year was at a mid-sized tech firm — I could probably get us in the door there")
  • Q10 → P(Priya: "we're only including people who've worked there for at least six months")

Lexical Resource(語彙)

Grammatical Range & Accuracy(文法)

Danielの発言("I'd actually pushed for something on multitasking ability at first, but... well, we ended up going with sustained attention instead")は、Phase 4レベルで求められる弱い意見転換シグナルの典型。 Day116("That's a fair point, although I'd push back slightly")と比べ、転換の理由を明示せず、間("well...")
入れ子の条件文("companies with both open-plan and enclosed spaces, and employees with six months' tenure")は、2つの条件が並列かつ同時に成立することを示す構文。

Priya(P)
