Day 144 復習Meera: Hello everyone, and welcome to the Riverside Community Library induction. I'm Meera, the membership coordinator here.
First, opening hours. We're normally open from 8am to 8pm on weekdays — actually, hold on, that's the old timetable from last year. We've had to cut back a little, so now the library closes at 6pm on weekdays, though Saturday and Sunday hours haven't changed.
Now, membership. Standard membership is twenty-five pounds a year — sorry, let me check that — it's actually gone up to thirty pounds this year. Students and residents aged sixty-five and over can get a concession rate of fifteen pounds, but only if you show your student card or a form of photo ID at the front desk in person; we can't process the discount if you just send us a scan by email afterwards.
Borrowing books themselves is free once you're a member, but if you'd like to borrow one of our e-readers, you'll need to leave a signed deposit form at the counter, since we don't keep a record of e-reader borrowers any other way.
As for parking, there's no dedicated car park at the library itself, so most members park in the multi-storey on Mill Street, just a two-minute walk away.
One last thing — if you return an item after the due date, you won't be fined immediately; instead, your borrowing privileges will be suspended for a week rather than a cash penalty being applied.
B. Their borrowing privileges are suspended for a week
C. They lose their membership
Reading: Matching Features(新規パッセージ・リモート学習の是非・4問)
Day 147 復習Paragraph A. The rapid expansion of remote learning over the past several years has generated a wide range of opinions among researchers about its long-term educational value, with views diverging sharply depending on each researcher's disciplinary background.
Paragraph B. Educational psychologist Dr. Sofia Berg, who studies self-regulated learning, argues that the central benefit of remote study is the flexibility it offers students who cannot manage a rigid, fixed timetable. "That flexibility comes at a cost, though," she notes. "Students need considerably stronger self-discipline to succeed without the external structure that a physical classroom naturally imposes."
Paragraph C. Economist Professor Daniel Osei takes a different view, focusing on institutional costs. He contends that reduced spending on physical facilities allows universities to enrol far more students than a campus-based model would ever permit, freeing up resources that can, in principle, be redirected toward scholarships or research funding.
Paragraph D. Technology researcher Dr. Naomi Clarke, who evaluates video-conferencing platforms used in higher education, maintains that even the most sophisticated tools available today cannot fully reproduce the informal networking that naturally happens between students on a physical campus. "A breakout room is not a hallway conversation," she points out.
Paragraph E. Dr. Raj Patel, a longstanding critic of the shift toward remote study, cautions that its suitability varies substantially depending on the subject being taught. He points out that most existing research fails to distinguish between theory-heavy disciplines... and laboratory-based or practical disciplines, where it often does not.

Day 151 復習Dr. Whitfield: Right, Emma, Tom — let's see how the proposal for your sleep study is coming along.
Emma: So we're still looking at sleep and exam performance, but we've adjusted our focus a bit. Originally we wanted to measure total hours slept per night, but the more we read, we realised total hours doesn't really capture the kind of daytime tiredness students actually report.
Tom: Right, and I'd actually pushed for something on caffeine intake at first, but... well, we ended up going with sleep consistency instead — how much someone's bedtime varies from night to night.
Dr. Whitfield: Good, that's a more defensible measure. How are you planning to track that?
Emma: We were going to use a daily sleep diary — participants write down their bedtime and wake time each morning for two weeks.
Dr. Whitfield: That works, but a diary alone relies quite heavily on self-report accuracy. I'd combine it with something more objective — an actigraphy watch that records movement and estimates sleep automatically.
Tom: We did think about that, actually, but weren't sure it was necessary.
Dr. Whitfield: I think it strengthens the design considerably — objective tracking alongside the self-report diary.
Emma: Okay, we can build that in.
Dr. Whitfield: Now, which students are you planning to recruit?
Tom: We want students living in the dorms, obviously, but Emma pointed out we should probably only include students who are also enrolled full-time, so we're not picking up on part-time students whose irregular schedules might confuse the results.
Emma: Right, and on top of that, we're only including students who've lived in the dorms for at least one full term, so we're not picking up on "new term" adjustment issues mixed in with the sleep issue.
Dr. Whitfield: Sensible. So — full-time students living in the dorms for at least one term — that narrows your sample quite a bit, but it'll be a much cleaner comparison.
Tom: We'd thought about a shorter cutoff, like two weeks, but figured one term is safer.
Dr. Whitfield: Agreed. Now — recruitment. How are you approaching students?
Emma: We were going to post flyers in the dorm common rooms.
Dr. Whitfield: You could, though response rates on flyers tend to be low. Do either of you have any existing contacts?
Tom: Actually, my sister works as a dorm supervisor here — I could probably get us introduced to residents through her.
Dr. Whitfield: Use that. Start with the residents you can already reach, then expand outward if you need a bigger sample.
Dr. Whitfield: Last thing — timeline. When's data collection?
Tom: We were aiming to finish within two weeks.
Dr. Whitfield: For this design, I'd stretch that to three — the actigraphy watches need a longer wear period to produce a reliable pattern, and that takes more coordination than a diary alone.
Emma: Three weeks it is, then.
B. Sleep consistency
C. Daytime tiredness directly
B. An actigraphy watch
C. A second diary kept by a roommate
Part A(Section 2
normally open from 8am to 8pm... actually, hold on, that's the old timetable... it closes at 6pm" の訂正後(6pm)が正解。 Q3は"leave a signed deposit form at the counter" という言い換えから拾う。
Part B(Matching Features)
Q5はBerg(柔軟性と自己規律のトレードオフ)、Q6はOsei(施設コスト削減と定員拡大)、Q7はClarke(技術では代替できない対面交流)、Q8はPatel(科目による適性の違いが研究に反映されていない)。
Part C(名詞節/副詞節/形容詞節)
Q12は関係詞節内で本来前置詞が必要な位置(the market is held in the square)なのに、"which"だけでは前置詞の情報が欠落する誤り。
Part E(複合グラフ問題)
Part F(Section 3
I'd actually pushed for... but... well, we ended up going with..." Dr. Whitfield: I'd combine it with something more objective"という直接発言。

- Part A: 6pm(訂正後)→ £15(学生/65歳以上かつ対面提示の条件クリア)→ deposit form → B(貸出停止)。
- Part B: Q5=A(Berg)、Q6=B(Osei)、Q7=C(Clarke)、Q8=D(Patel)。
- Part F: Q16=B(sleep consistency)、Q17=B(actigraphy watch)、Q18=W(Dr. Whitfield)、Q19=E(Emma、Tom
- Part D 骨格 → "Well, that's a difficult question, actually. If more cities had invested heavily in public transport decades ago, traffic congestion today would almost certainly be far less severe. That said, roads still matter for regions without dense populations. So, on balance, I'd lean towards public transport, especially in large cities."
- Part E Overview骨格 → "Overall, Weights training was the most popular activity by membership, followed by Cardio, and average session duration at these two activities peaked in different age groups... Notably, despite having the fewest members overall, Yoga and Swimming recorded the longest average sessions of any activity among those aged 60 and over..."
- Part E Body 1骨格 → "Weights attracted 720,000 members, more than any other activity, and average session duration there peaked among 25-59 year-olds, at 65 minutes. Cardio, in contrast, drew 580,000 members but showed a different pattern, with under-25s recording the longest sessions, at 70 minutes..."
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A | 6pm(on weekdays) | "now the library closes at 6pm on weekdays"(訂正後の時間) |
| 3 | A | deposit form(signed) | "leave a signed deposit form at the counter" |
| 4 | A | B | "your borrowing privileges will be suspended for a week rather than a cash penalty" |
| 5 | B | A(Dr. Sofia Berg) | "the central benefit... is the flexibility... Students need considerably stronger self-discipline" |
| 6 | B | B(Prof. Daniel Osei) | "reduced spending on physical facilities allows universities to enrol far more students" |
| 7 | B | C(Dr. Naomi Clarke) | "even the most sophisticated tools... cannot fully reproduce the informal networking" |
| 8 | B | D(Dr. Raj Patel) | "its suitability varies substantially depending on the subject... research fails to distinguish" |
| 9 | C | 名詞節(文の主語) | "That the new park attracted..."
| 10 | C | 形容詞節("the architect"を修飾) | "who designed the plaza" が先行詞を限定 |
| 11 | C | "Because the funding was delayed, construction stopped for six months."
| 12 | C | "This is the square where the market is held every Saturday."
"Well, that's a difficult question, actually. If more cities had invested heavily in public transport several decades ago, I think traffic congestion today would be far less severe than it currently is. That said, roads still matter enormously in areas with lower population density, where public transport simply isn't cost-effective. So, on balance, I'd lean towards prioritising public transport, particularly in large, densely populated cities, since that's where the returns on investment are clearest."
① Overview: "Overall, Weights training was the most popular activity by membership, followed by Cardio, and average session duration at these two activities peaked in different age groups: the 25–59 bracket for Weights, but under-25s for Cardio. Notably, despite having the fewest members overall, Yoga and Swimming recorded the longest average sessions of any activity among those aged 60 and over, suggesting that overall popularity did not always align with engagement among older members."
② Body 1: "Weights attracted 720,000 members, more than any other activity, and average session duration there peaked among 25–59 year-olds, at 65 minutes, before falling among the over-60s. Cardio, in contrast, drew 580,000 members but showed a different pattern, with under-25s recording the longest sessions, at 70 minutes, the highest figure recorded for any age group at any activity."
