Street Trees and Urban Cooling

Trees actually planted last year: (1)
Most cooling comes from (2) rather than shade
Main species: maples and (3)
Young trees die if they are not (4) during their first two summers
Main obstacle: not money but a lack of underground (5)

Write ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.

say -v Daniel -r 150 -f lecture.txt
🎓 Situation: A lecturer in an urban planning course talks about street trees.

Right, let's pick up where we left off. Did you all manage to look at the city tree survey? Good. Today I want to look at street trees as a way of cooling cities.

Last year the council planted around twelve thousand trees. Well, that's what the press release said, but twelve thousand was the target. The number that actually went into the ground was nine thousand five hundred.

Now, most people assume trees cool a street mainly through shade. Shade matters, of course, but most of the cooling doesn't come from shade at all. It comes from transpiration: trees draw water up from the soil and release it through their leaves, and that process takes heat out of the surrounding air.

Which trees? The council chose mostly maples and oaks, partly because they tolerate pollution. The trouble is that young trees are fragile. If nobody waters them during their first two summers, a lot of them simply die. And in fact that's what happened in the first round of planting: roughly a third of them died before they were established.

You might think the biggest obstacle is money. It turned out that it isn't. The real problem is what's under the pavement: gas pipes, water mains and cables. There's often no underground space left for roots, so planners end up putting trees in containers, which is far more expensive and far less effective.

So, to sum up: trees work, but only if we plan for the roots as carefully as we plan for the branches.

10
Newly planted saplings are highly ______ drought in their first two summers.
11
Critics argue that the cost of container planting is not ______ the modest cooling it provides.
12
Further funding for the scheme is ______ the results of next year's survival count.

D

Grammar: Mixed conditionals/Subjunctive(書き言葉・5問)

Day 150・157 復習
15
If the council had started planting trees in the 1990s, the city centre is much cooler today.
16
If the city were not so densely built, it would have been far easier to find space for roots over the past decade.
17
The report recommends that every new residential street includes at least four trees.
18
It is essential that young trees are watered throughout their first two summers.
19
Had the planners checked the pipe maps, they would not lose a third of the saplings last year.

Writing Task 1:

Because the new bridge was built, cycling increased a lot. Fewer people drove to work in 2025, from 64% to 41%, and the train become more popular, 9% to 18%. Bus is also decreased from 14% to 12%. Walking went up too. The town also has a new market square and the station is bigger. So I think the transport in Kelbridge is much better now and people are more healthy than before.

Speaking: Part 3(45〜60秒)

Day 157・160 復習
21 Part 3
"Should cities spend more money on planting trees, or on air conditioning in public buildings?"
  • Mixed conditional

1① 訂正"twelve thousand ... but ... the target" → 後から言った数字
2② 対比+⑥ 綴り"doesn't come from shade at all. It comes from ..." trans-+spir+-ation
5② 対比+④ 言い換えmoney を否定 → "no underground space left" を "a lack of underground ____" に

Part B(Connected speech)

Part C・D

C は Day158 の型: 形容詞+to/形容詞+with/過去分詞+on・upon/名詞+of/他動詞(前置詞なし)。 recommend / it is essential that の that 節は書き言葉では原形(英国英語は should+原形も可)。

Part E(採点者の順番)

1A9,500"The number that actually went into the ground was nine thousand five hundred." ① twelve thousand は target
2Atranspiration"It comes from transpiration" ② shade
3Aoaks"mostly maples and oaks" ③ 複数形の s が必要
4Awatered"If nobody waters them" ④⑤ 能動→受動。water / watering は不可
5Aspace"no underground space left for roots" ② money
6BDid you (all) / ⑤d+y → /dʒ/
7BLast year / ⑤(+④)t+y → /tʃ/。
8Ba lot of them / ①+③lot‿of、of → /əv/、them → /əm/
9BIt turned out / ①(+④)turned‿out の d が次の母音へ。
10Csusceptible to形容詞+to
11Ccommensurate with形容詞+with
12Ccontingent on / upon過去分詞+on/upon
13Cpaucity ofa +名詞+of
15D... would be much cooler today. (Mixed)
17D... street include at least four trees.recommend that +原形(英国英語は should include も可)
18D... that young trees be watered ...
19D... would not have lost ...
1Because the new bridge was built, cycling increasedTAデータは因果を示していない(Day159 の落とし穴①)
3Fewer people drove to workTA
5Bus is also decreasedGRAdecrease は自動詞 → Bus use also decreased
6Walking went up too.TA
7The town also has a new market square ...CC/GRA
8So I think ... more healthyTA/LR意見と健康の推測はデータにない。more healthy → healthier

In terms of transport, a pedestrian and cycle bridge was added and a riverside cycle path was built, while the central car park gave way to a market square. Over the same period, the proportion of residents driving to work fell from 64% to 41%, whereas the share cycling more than tripled to 17% and rail commuting doubled to 18%. Bus use, by contrast, dipped slightly from 14% to 12%.
Well, I'd put trees first, to be honest. If cities had planted more trees thirty years‿ago, we probably wouldn't need nearly as much‿air conditioning today. Trees cool the whole street, not just one building, and they keep‿on working without‿any electricity. That said, I don'(t) think we can ge(t) rid‿of air conditioning in places like hospitals‿(w)or care homes, where older people are at real risk during a heatwave. So‿(w)I'd say trees for the long term, and air conditioning where lives are‿(r)actually at stake.

Listening(A・B): 罠は「文字」と「音」の2層

Vocabulary(C):

Grammar(D): Mixed

Writing Task 1(E):

Speaking(F):

"If cities had planted ... thirty years ago, we ... wouldn't need ... today" が過去の条件→現在の結果。連結は ① years‿ago・much‿air・rid‿of、② hospitals‿(w)or・So‿(w)I'd、英国英語の連結の r(are‿(r)actually)。

recommend that ... includes三単現の習慣が強いrecommend that ... include
